The N R A Advisory Committee asks employers not to display the Blue Eagle unless they have signed the wage and hour compliance certificate. General Johnson grants two weeks leeway before enforcing Roosevelt’s blanket wage and employment agreement and warns against any recalcitrant minority delaying the recovery program.
Hagerstown awaits Washington orders to start a large job recovery drive by Labor Day. A. F. Underhill was elected General of the Recovery committee and Mrs. James Webb named lieutenant general. Colonels Roy Danzer and Charles W. Hofman join the top ranks as organizers and speakers as the campaign forms its leadership.
Mrs Frances W. King was sentenced to a prison term of not less than five nor more than ten years for attempted blackmail of Bruce Barton. Judge Joseph E. Corrigan ordered her taken to Bedford Hills prison. A jury convicted King of blackmail for attempting to obtain $50,000 by threatening to publish a novel Barton claimed was libelous.
A cloudburst near Castle Rock flooded Castlewood dam 44 years old, collapsing it and sending Cherry Creek torrent through Denver. Three lives lost and at least a million dollars in damage, with twelve bridges swept away and widespread destruction along the stream from the dam to the city. Phillip Charles Edwards, 19, insists he desires execution for murder of Calbert Aposhian. Police have not yet accepted his account of mutilation and killing after rechecking the July 18 route and related details, though Detective Captain Harry Kelley sees possible truth in parts of his story.
Patrolman Carl Wilson was shot in the leg in a early morning shootout with a suspect believed to have robbed a couple in Salisbury. The officer's injury was not serious but the suspect escaped.
Washington Aug 4 The six weeks old movement for higher wages and shorter hours has spread nationwide outpacing officials. Officials plan soon a stock taking measure on new jobs and wage increases. Many codes have not yet been put in force. Administration seeks numbers of re employment agreements and workers affected while continuing hearings on garment shirt graphic steel lumber and oil codes and women’s coat and bank trades.
Wiley Post, the round the world flier, departed Cumberland Md early today aiming for Oklahoma City by night. After a forced halt overnight due to severe weather, he planned a nonstop return home with traveling companion Harry G. Hendrickson. About 200 people greeted the Winnie Mac at Cumberland airport as Post prepared for takeoff. A reception was planned for five this evening upon his arrival.
Two people were killed and three injured in an automobile crash near Snow Hill early today. Cyrus Smack of Pocomoke City died instantly and Mrs. Frank Spide of Pocomoke City died later in a hospital here after their car was struck by a vehicle driven by Miss Margaret Richardson of Snow Hill.
Fifty National Guardsmen will patrol Harlan Kentucky until after Saturdays primary to prevent clashes after disorders at Kenvir yesterday left Robert Roark fatally wounded and four others beaten. County patrolman Clarence Middleton said he and two relatives found 432 ballots marked in a ballot box at Bill Farley's home. Middleton declined to discuss the shooting.
The Board of County Commissioners will likely decide next Tuesday on Sheriff W Bruce Downin's request to be paid 50 cents per day for feeding jail prisoners. The June bill remains unpaid. Downin argues the 1933 40 cent rate applies to his successor, as he was elected under a 30 cent basis, while others under special acts faced cuts. A similar suit over feeding allowances is filed in Hartford County by Sheriff Reese Bowman.
The blue eagle window symbol will cost a New York firm about 1,000,000 dollars annually to join the NRA. James F. Hodgson met with the firm's executive who called the investment a good one. The firm employs 20,000 and expects 1,000 more jobs upon code compliance.
Mrs. Kate Cromer 68 of Aldis West Virginia died after being struck by a car in front of her home Sunday night in Georgetown Hospital Washington. The driver was a young woman. Cromer widow of Rev. T K Cromer, survived by three sons. She was sister in law to Margaret Sily and Bernice Cromer of Reynolds Avenue Hagerstown and had several nephews nearby.
Reports to National Recovery Administration HQ allege more employers in Youngstown Ohio post the Blue Eagle yet skirt recovery rules. A restaurant owner allegedly raised waitress wages from six to thirteen fifty weekly while charging meals at a dollar daily and increasing menu prices.
The New York Stock Exchange shut for the day after an ammonia pipe leak fouled the trading floor with fumes around 12 15 p m. Early reports indicated no one collapsed, but traders were forced to evacuate as fumes spread. The exchange then decided to remain closed for the rest of the day.
London Aug 4 two cures for influenza pneumonia by serum similar to that used to immunize ferrets against flu were claimed by Dr Ronald Hare. He treated two women including a dying patient, both cases reacted dramatically and recovered. Serum made from humans convalescing from influenza. Aimed to curb the fly virus germ and find an antidote for humans.
General Halo Balbo, commander of 34 Italian seaplanes, announced from Shoal Harbor that bad North Atlantic weather near Valentia Island forces a change in their return path. The plan shifts to a route via the Azores and Lisbon with meteorological stations ordered to prepare. Balbo expects takeoff on the next leg from the United States back to Italy soon.
Corporal Edwin Flavin of the World’s Fair police fled when two exhibition bulls, a Texas longhorn and an Aberdeen Angus, seemed to trail him. He forgot his duties and ran, dodging the animals amid the Chicago grounds.
Surveys and plans completed at considerable expense point to staying with the Raven Rock to Mt Zion road for Camp Ritchie. Edgemont residents pressed Governor Ritchie to shift routes, but road men deem the Edgemont option impractical due to new road construction and a Pennsylvania line crossing. The State Roads Commission plans to advertise bids next Tuesday with about $55,000 available to build three miles this Fall, while a separate note from New York reports the Railroad Credit Corp will repay 1 percent on August 15 to roads contributing to its freight surcharge loan pool, totaling $742,402 for the second repayment.
After a brief moment of liberty in Poona on August 4, Mahatma Gandhi was rearrested and immediately sentenced to one year in jail for refusing to remain in Poona and to end his political activities.
In Cambridge Maryland on August 4 HH L Edmunds a retired real estate dealer went fishing across the Great Choptank river to Bowling Creek. His line snagged a 50 to 60 pound skate which towed him back to his doorstep as it expired. Also reported three month sentence for Frank Weicher in indecent exposure case and Olive M Powell filing for divorce from William D Powell alleging unfaithfulness in 1915 with ten children.
In Washington on August 4 a near term settlement in the Pennsylvania bituminous coal strike emerged as President Roosevelt intervened. mediator Hugh Johnson, Gov. Pinchot, John Lewis of the United Mine Workers, and Frick officials left talks with the understanding believed to be imminent. One worker had died and many injured amid the dispute before the meeting set terms and a framework for an agreement.
Two Baltimore trucks from Victor Lynn Co. crashed and burned killing Christian Schwartzbauer 27 Milford Delaware Russell Adams 28 Lincoln Delaware and Preston Rogers 25 Milford Delaware. A second truck crashed near Dover injuring its driver.

CHICAGO Aug 4 Lieut Commander T G W Settle of the Navy prepared for a solo balloon flight from Soldier Field to the stratosphere. The Gordon Bennett winner said a high pressure system moving toward Chicago was assured and inflating the 100000 cubic foot leak balloon would begin at sundown with Mrs Dawes christening it A Century of Progress.
