In cooperation with Governor Herbert and Maryland Traffic Safety Committee a Safety Poster Contest will be held in county high schools. The Adulnae Association of St. Marys Female Seminary sponsors the event to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the seminary. Junior and senior high students may enter with prizes of 25, 20, and 6 dollars. County winners advance to state judging in Annapolis with judges Hans Schuler Isaac S. George and Hughes Wilson. Entries must be at the county superintendent by May 10. The safety drive aims to raise youth awareness of safer traffic conditions in Maryland.

Arthur Williamson longtime general superintendent of the Western Maryland Railway died at Union Memorial Hospital at 7:52 Friday morning after months of illness. Born 1882 in Stoke on Trent he served in the Boer War and earned two decorations, later rising from laborer to superintendent. He leaves a widow three sons a daughter and two sisters in England. Funeral at Emmanuel Episcopal Church Cumberland with private interment in Thomas West Virginia.

Tax returns short of estimate in Maryland
Annapolis April 20 State Comptroller J Millard Tawes reported 7 255 000 collected from the new state income tax with 100 372 returns cleared. Collections trail the 8 000 000 estimate by about 745 000 but Tawes said final receipts will come from outstanding corporate returns by the fiscal year end September 30.
