The Turkish government considers continuing trade with Germany amid Allied assaults and Balkan route risks. Turkey relies on German goods for textiles, oil, cables, and machine parts, while fearing Allied disruption could leave it economically isolated and destitute until the war ends.
Coast Guard combat photographer Ray Platnick says American troops have no more compunction in killing Japanese than farmers have in destroying pests. He compares it to squashing a bug and notes the duty to clean out the rats. Platnick, formerly with PM, photographed the Makin Island landing and served 20 months in three war theaters.
The Soviet military government will control German territory occupied by the Red Army with Eisenhower at ultimate responsibility. Representatives from 15 AFL locals in Hagerstown and Washington county will attend the Maryland and District of Columbia Federation of Labor convention in Cumberland May 22 to 25. Mayor Sweeney and Gov Herbert O Connor and AFL president William Green will speak at a rally May 24 at the State Armory. About 500 are expected. the extra day will cover postwar issues. Corp. William A. Grove of Hagerstown was seriously injured in a gunnery training accident at Tono pah Nevada Army Air Base that killed two fellow soldiers. Col. McCrillis withheld details pending investigation. The dead are 2nd Lieut. William Morgan of Olympia Washington and Staff Sgt. Keith Monroe Talley of Pinckneyville Illinois.
The Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Washington County held two meetings at the Y M C A to plan the fifty eighth annual convention to be hosted in the city in May. Mrs Bina Baker presided with prayer by Miss Ruth Reichard. Ruth Reichard was named chair of the resolutions committee and Miss Bartha Tyson of Baltimore will speak at the event.
A six week Red Cross Nurses Aide course began Wednesday at Washington County Hospital led by Mrs Wil son Hipple. The class, including Mesdames Byron Buterbaugh John Buterbaugh Andrew Luther Emmett Slaydon and Joseph Ward, trains volunteers to assist nurses and work in Public Health and the Blood Donors Unit. Mrs W R Willard chairs the Red Cross Nurses Aide Committee. Marine insurances traced to earlier origins than life insurance.
The Hagerstown Municipal Band will launch a Sunday concert series at City Park on June 11 with Dr Peter Buys conducting. The program features soloists choral and instrumental groups, a Carlisle Barracks band visit if transport allows, schoolchildren mass chorus, and broadcasts plus a Martinsburg hospital concert. Rehearsals start soon.

Washington county swine breeders are invited to a meeting at the county agent's office in the old post office building on Wednesday April 19. Maryland Extension Service livestock specialists Joseph Vial and Ural G Bee will discuss the Maryland sow testing program hog production under wartime conditions and hog market outlook. The gathering follows the annual spring 4 H hog sale at Four States Livestock Sales Inc where about 100 hogs raised by 4 H members will be sold.
Lieutenant Herbert R OConor Jr son of Maryland Governor will wed Ella Mercedes Galvin tomorrow in Baltimore. The couple will reside in Fredericksburg Virginia with the governor serving as best man. The ceremony will be performed by Rev William Paul Smith uncle of the bride.

Charles D. Hodge a 22 year old prisoner from Dickerson Maryland escaped from the Maryland State Penal Farm at Roxbury yesterday afternoon. He is 5 feet 8 inches tall with brown hair and eyes and wore regulation prison garb. Hodge was serving a four year term from Montgomery County.
Secretary Hull denounces any notion that Britain and the United States should ally with Hitler to attack Russia. He declares such thoughts infamous and rejects any shift in Allied aims. He emphasizes continued cooperation with Britain and the U S against the Axis and commutes no policy shifts.
Dr Harold R Bohlman from Johns Hopkins Hospital was principal speaker at the Washington County Medical Society dinner at Hotel Alexander. He demonstrated hip treatment methods with X rays and drawings, covering infant and adult cases and noting cures from fracture reduction. Army hospital leaders described overseas service and hospital reconditioning, with plans for another July dinner.

A yellow air raid signal was received at 9 29 PM at the police station prompting fears of an enemy attack in Hagerstown. Officers on duty prepared for Civilian Defense mobilization but the all clear came within half an hour, with the yellow light used to muster responders for tests or actual alerts.
