New York officials announce presentments charging a Brooklyn gambling syndicate with a yearly $100 million operation. Special Assistant John Harlen Amen led an 11 month probe alleging over $1 million paid as protection. The 491 police officers and four lawyers named face suspensions and possible trials.
Maryland's Legislative Council voted to study advisability of recommending that Governor O Conor call a special session of the General Assembly. The motion, urged by Senator Robert Kimble, passed unanimously as officials say state problems have reached an acute stage. The report notes a 33 percent increase in cheese production for 1942 is being sought by the Department of Agriculture.
George Wilson Blake an organizer with Frederick County ties was seized in Long Beach California after fleeing on $2500 bail. He faces indictment on charges including false pretense sodomy and assault and battery and will be extradited promptly to Frederick County authorities.
Two cars collided on East Baltimore street near King caused damage to both vehicles. Ernest Kurz 18 406 block McDowell avenue was charged by Patrolmen Carroll and Hoover with failing to keep to the right of the center of the street. No injuries reported.
Joshua R Messersmith formerly of Hagerstown has been promoted from captain to major. He is the son of Mr and Mrs James W Messersmith of 425 Summit Avenue and a Hagerstown High School and West Point graduate. He serves in the Quartermaster Corps in charge of transportation at a camp in Hawaii.
