A 35 member Tacoma Chamber of Commerce tour party led by Mayor George Smiley will sail from Seattle aboard the Baranof on its northbound Alaska voyage. The 4,500 mile itinerary includes Ketchikan Juneau Seward Anchorage and Fairbanks with a return via Cordova Juneau Petersburg Wrangell and Ketchikan. The party will broadcast three times from Alaska stations.
D D Muir Jr vice president of States Smelting plans a two week Fairbanks inspection tour. He will visit Fairbanks Exploration Department and Hammon Consolidated Gold Fields in Nome before returning aboard the Yukon bound Electra transport plane. Passengers include G W Rathjens and family as they accompany him on the routine company tour.
In Madrid on June 16, three thousand miners descended into the Rio Tinto workings and vowed to stay underground until demands for steady work and higher pay are met. Authorities dispatched 200 shock police and civil guards to pit mouths to curb unrest among about six thousand miners above ground. The underground group carried beds and food and signaled willingness to stay indefinitely.

Pa irbanks Alaska June 1 A Mrs Charles Fisher Alaska Yukon pioneer who came north 35 years ago died yesterday from heart trouble. She recently came here from Ruby where she and her husband ran a hotel. He died here last winter. Survived by three daughters Mrs W N Growden wife of the United States Commissioner here Miss Polly Fisher and Miss Mildred Fisher both of Ruby where Mildred is postmaster.
Sister Superior Romauld of St. Joseph's Hospital is succeeded by Sister Bernard of the local staff in Fairbanks Alaska on June 16. Romauld comes from Providence Hospital Seattle where she returns for further assignment and has also served at Nemo.
Weather station bids for a Fairbanks airplane observation contract span September 1 1996 to February 28 1037. The Fairbanks Office will open bids on July 20. The contract winner will run twice daily observations from 16600 feet altitude.
Congress sends to the White House a bill authorizing 7500 dollars for Alaska in the first year for agricultural experiments and extension work with gradual increases to a permanent annual total of 47000 by year ten. Most funds will fund experimental farms in the Matanuska Valley and Fairbanks area. Delegate Dimond expects presidential approval after favorable reviews from the Agriculture and Interior Departments and Budget Bureau.
Alford John Bradford Legion Post sponsorship of the annual Fourth of July celebration was set at a Chamber of Commerce meeting. The Chamber agreed to guarantee 650 dollars with a plan to raise 100 more. Committee led by Commander B M Polley and including A B Karnes and T Petrich was authorized to organize events focused on children, races, and prizes, featuring a band concert, fireworks, and toe-tapping games.
Plane tractor service crew led by L. W. Henger and H. F. Wells departed Juneau aboard the PAA Lockheed Electra for Fairbanks to join the Northern Commercial Company, the local agents for the Caterpillar outfit.
