Freedmans Convention Opens With Poor Attendance
The Freedmans Convention began sittings on Wednesday 10th inst but drew few delegates due to short notice and travel difficulties. Editors note they will publish proceedings in full in the next issue.
Fire devastates Jackson and Ellis store row
About three on Friday morning a blaze consumed the Store of Mr. Sauter at Jackson and Ellis. Firefighters battled the flames for more than two hours, aided by light winds, with five small stores damaged. Principal losses fell on Sauter and Henderson & Carter, while Pearce, Roach, and Walton saved much of their property. The fire likely started from a stovepipe, in an old dry building, causing substantial property loss.

An 1865 Georgia act authorizes free persons of color to testify as witnesses in civil cases where they are defendants or where the offense involves their persons or property.
