Gallant Ninth Veterans Hold Tenth Batavia Reunion
The 89th Ohio Volunteer Infantry held its tenth annual reunion in Batavia on September 22 with about two hundred veterans in attendance. A full day of parades, speeches, music, and a large dinner followed morning arrivals, with prayers, welcomes, and tributes to fallen comrades. The next reunion is set for Georgetown on September 20, 1887.

Carp Culture Gains Ground in Clermont County
The Courier reports carp culture is rapidly becoming a recognized, profitable industry in Clermont County. E. J. Hutchinson of Jackson township builds a lake costing over a thousand dollars to cultivate carp, asserting the method can scale from small plots to large flooded tracts and could rival poultry in profitability. He envisions widespread adoption, with fish shipped in water tanks and kept in water during sale to bolster health and happiness.

Custody Battle Over Milford Boy Granted
J N Schoonover of Milford petitions the Probate court for custody of his three year old son kept by his sister Mrs Cabel since the wife’s death. Mrs Cabel says the mother on her death bed gave consent. The judge and lawyers exchange remarks as the child sits in court while a lawyer quotes poetry and the petition is granted as authority.

Mt. Carmel Man Survives Train Collision at Columbia Station
A Mt. Carmel resident Ed wards narrowly escaped death after being struck by a Little Miami train at Columbia station. He was bruised but no bones were broken and was returned home, after drinking with friends and failing to heed warnings as the train approached.

Death of an Old Resident James Campbell
James Campbell, early county settler and Scot born, died at his home on Sunday September 19 at age 75. He settled near Batavia in 1842 and built a modest fortune through honesty and thrift. He left a large, respected family. Interment was in Monroe cemetery near Nicholsville on Wednesday.
