Family grape growers reap rewards amid viticultural area talk
Ken Ewing and family, co-owners of Windmont Farm near Laurel, report a record crop of over 1000 pounds of grapes this year. They grow Ives and French Hybrid varieties, spray sparingly, and sell mainly to private buyers on a pick your own basis. They worry whether the new Ohio River viticultural area designation will push grape growers toward wineries, but Ewing says most wineries source from large vineyards or own vines. The Ewings also raise bees and tap maples for syrup.
