Death of a Veteran Preacher and Philanthropist Rev Robinson Ely
Rev Robinson Ely, a Batavia native and longtime M E church figure, died at his home Saturday night at sundown aged 75 into his 76th year. A Mexican War veteran and devoted farmer and horticulturist, he cared for the distressed and supported the needy. He married Lavina Weaver in 1852 and left two children Edwin C Ely and a widow. His Masonic funeral at the M E church drew one of the town’s largest attendances.
