Frightful Death on Huntington Road Trestle Collapse
Two Neville carpenters, John Donovan aged 83 and Samuel Singer 24, were on a trestle when supports failed and 210 feet of oak timbers toppled into the trestle area near the Licking River at Newport. Donovan was killed instantly. Singer was fatally injured, with multiple bone fractures and internal injuries. The trestle stood about 25 feet high, held by guy ropes, and a mule team pulling timbers triggered the failure. Donovan leaves a wife and two children. Singer’s fate was imminent. The remains of Donovan were sent to Neville.
