Basketball season opens in Clermont County schedule released

In Clermont County high school basketball begins Friday November 17 with eight of ten teams in action. The Batavia district coaches and superintendents outlined the schedule including Amelia Anderson Two Felicity Moscow Milford Goshen New Richmond Williamsburg and others across dates from November 17 to February 16. Additions may follow.

Odd Fellows Kon Bethel meeting with Grand Master Dick

The Clermont and Brown counties Odd Fellows plan a November 9 1983 gathering in Bethel Ohio featuring Grand Master Dick. Past Grands meet in the afternoon and a Grand Master Dick class forms candidates from local lodges. Dr W E Thompson 99 will serve as Venerable Warden.

Milford man acquitted on firearm charge

William Wooster of Milford was found not guilty by a jury on the charge of pointing a firearm. Judge Charles White presided the case with N. G. Cover representing the defendant.

Bethel and Batavia Postponed Baseball Game Rescheduled

Rain and cold weather postponed the Bethel Merchants versus Batavia game from last Sunday. The teams will play next Sunday at Burke Park in Bethel with Batavia bringing its strongest lineup of the season and Bethel starting Griffith with Hayden catching.

Halloween Party At Armory Sponsored By Batavia Legion

Batavia American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a Halloween party at the armory on October 31 to raise funds for relief and child welfare work. An All County Band accompanies events with a parade from the courthouse at 7 30 pm to the armory, prizes for adults and children, card games, a quilt raffle, and a pumpkin pie prize plus refreshments.

County Superintendent's Corner Reports Salary Schedules Pending

The county superintendent notes that the expected salary schedules have not arrived yet and hope they will soon. The annual session of the Southwestern Teachers' Association will be in Cincinnati on Oct. 27 and 28, with most county teachers planning to attend. those who miss Friday are urged to teach if possible.

Free Church Play Brings Community to School House

The Willing Workers of the Monterey Christian church stage a play with free entertainment at the school house this Saturday October 28. They will sell sandwiches coffee pie and homemade candy. A beautiful quilt will be offered for sale and everyone is welcome.

Fox Hunt On Minstrel Show Around Batavia

The Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio Fox Hunt runs Tuesday to Friday with riverside farms hosting races and a big Davis farm feast. Over 100 dogs and hundreds of men attend. Bill Ware of Cincinnati leads hounds. A separate Minstrel Show is staged Friday night at Batavia Town Hall with a 25 girl chorus and Cincinnati orchestra.

Dr Albert E Smith to Speak at Chile M E Church Sunday

Dr Albert E Smith, who preached his first sermon 50 years ago in Chile, will speak Sunday morning October 29. He seeks to meet old friends. basket dinners provided and coffee served by the Community Club. Mary E Leming, born August 14 1879, died October 9 1938 on the farm where she lived. She married Frank M Leming October 8 1928. He and her brothers Marley and Frank and many relatives mourn her departure.

Western Ohio women's clubs meet in Oxford visit

Mrs. E. C. Ely president of the Clermont County Federation of Women’s Clubs attended a Southwestern District of Ohio meeting in Oxford on Tuesday October 17. She was a guest speaker and was praised for the hospitality shown by the hosts Mrs. John Huntington and others at the gathering.

Dies Suddenly at Home on Main Street

Clayton Cartwell aged 79 collapsed and died at 11 45 a m last Wednesday at his Batavia home. He moved from Springfield with his wife to settle here. A widow Mrs Carrie Cartwell survives. No children. He would have marked his fiftieth anniversary with his wife on February 19. Funeral was held Friday at 10 80 and burial followed in Springfield. He was the last surviving sibling of seven. his last sister was buried October 4.

National Grangers Celebrate Fifth Anniversary at Marathon Grange

National Grangers guests at Marathon Grange schoolhouse observe the society's fifth anniversary with a memorial service for four deceased members. A new team to install the official hymn was formed for use by any grange. In related news, Harry Doughman and Mike Haney of Batavia were injured when their car overturned near Dry Run on the Cincinnati road. They were taken for treatment and the vehicle totaled. Saturday night Charles J. Whitmer and his son escaped injury when their auto hit a dog near West Union, then struck a telephone pole. the car was damaged but the men and dog were unharmed.

County Seat Bridge Plans Ready for Batavia County

Plans and specifications for the Batavia county bridge project are on file at the State Highway office. The steel cemented structure will have a 30 foot roadway, 180 feet long, five foot walks each side with a three foot balustrade, and ornamental lights. Estimated cost 71000 dollars. contract expected mid November. Also Davis hill project reportedly on the same program.

Reconstruction Finance Corporation of Washington approves the mortgage and bond form for Williamsburg Water Works bonds. About $20,000 of the $88,000 remaining will be issued as the project progresses. Plant installation will begin soon. Clover Progressive Farm Woman's Club members and families held a Hallowe'en party hosted by Mrs. Mahlon Walker with Mrs. Clara Miller co hosting. Willis Bogart won the best masked prize amid stunts and socializing. lunch included sandwiches, pickles, pie, salad and coffee.

Clermont County Seeks Aid for Pork Distribution

Fred Croswell handles government pork for Clermont County as 800 pounds are allotted. One request for 100 pounds arrived last week. Pork has not yet arrived and distribution will be small. Some pork may be made into fertilizer for needy residents. Packages will be four and six pounds each.

Nationally Known Speaker To Head Batavia Farm Bureau Meet

BE Carter president of the Clermont County Farm Bureau announces Mrs. Charles W. Sewell will be the feature speaker at the annual meeting in the Batavia U B church on Friday November 8. Sewell is a homemaker living on a Tippecanoe County Indiana farm and serves as Home and Community Director for the American Farm Bureau Federation. Stoddard of Olive Branch chairs the program committee with Caldwell of Owensville on the resolution committee and Robinson of Locust Corner heading the arrangements committee. Lunch will be served by church ladies.

Frank H Clasgens dies in Cincinnati at 67

Frank H. Clasgens of New Richmond died at Good Samaritan Hospital Cincinnati at 12 30 PM Thursday in his 68th year. He was a stockholder in J H Clasgens Woolen Mills and a traveling representative for years, retiring two years ago. Survived by son Frances of New Richmond and daughter Mrs R J McNamara of Buffalo. Burial at New Richmond Sunday.

Pomona Grange elects officers and honors degree class

Clermont County Pomona Grange met at Goshen School Auditorium on Oct 21 with about 250 attendees. A class of twelve from Goshen Williamsburg Clermont Marathon Wayne Batavia Monroe Bethel earned the fifth degree. officers were elected and prizes awarded in a county Grange contest.
