News from New Orleans reports Monterey capitulated after a three day fight as American forces under General Taylor overcame Mexican defenses. Captain Eaton arrived with despatches to Washington, while Gen Worth led the assault on the west. The army, though victorious, suffered heavy losses, with over five hundred killed or wounded. The special correspondent notes Mexicans outnumbered but defenses were breached, and the city and its supplies fell to U.S. forces.
On the 21st Gen Twiggs division and Gen Butler's volunteers moved to the left to aid Gen Worth. Artillery including a 10 inch mortar and two 24 pounders began firing on the Citadel fort from 1400 yards away. The 1st Division, the Mississippi and Tennessee regiments, and the 1st Ohio regiments advanced through the streets, capturing the fort and repelling enemy fire from parapets and houses. By the 23rd the garrison was reduced to the main plaza vicinity, with further assaults and reinforcements driving enemy forces from the district. Capitol-like bombardment continued, and negotiations for capitulation began on the 24th, though the American commander rejected surrender terms.
Special correspondence reports Gen. Taylor accepting Gen Ampudia's capitulation at Monterey on Sept 24 1847 with terms allowing Mexican officers to march out with arms and a single battery then evacuate within seven days while an eight week armistice keeps lines from Rinconada to Linares. Casualties run high as Worth and Hays force strong action near the citadel.
The report chronicles heavy casualties and exhausted fighting as Taylor’s forces attack barricades. officers killed and wounded include Col. Watson and Capt. Mortis. The Texas and Mississippi regiments, aided by Ridgley’s artillery, captured forts and forced surrender of Monterey after street by street fighting. Col.
