The claim centers on an alleged defalcation by John A Atkinson age 24 who managed the Chicago house after his father’s death. No arrests.
The body of Samuel Edwards, an engineer at Smith Sutton & Co. steel works, was found in the Allegheny River with head injuries. He was last seen Saturday night at 11 and believed murdered for jewelry, watch, chain, shirt studs, and a large sum of money missing.
In Liverpool the Irish detective detained a Hungarian steerage passenger from the Lord Clive, an American Line steamer from Philadelphia. Suspicious packages described as nitro goaking near the pound area triggered the arrest as passengers disembarked.
During a severe thunderstorm in Jouzet Indiana today, Mrs. William Grace and an unidentified man were killed. The man was struck while on a tree next to a bare prairie and the woman was struck near a washed treetop. Authorities reported the incident occurred early this morning.
A Washington and New York express struck a wagon at Red Mill crossing near Elkton Maryland killing three occupants William Andrew Prior Katie Duling and Robert Jones. In Blough's Cut on the South Pennsylvania Railroad Hungarian laborers attempted to drill out unexploded dynamite using an iron drill. A spark ignited the powder causing a massive blast. One man was killed another lost a right arm and several workers suffered serious injuries.
Gettysburg Pennsylvania hosts reunions of the Third and Sixteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiments. Atchison October 17 Bill Norris notorious train robber and Polk Wells associate was sentenced at Oskaloosa to twenty one years for burglary. After sentence he attempted suicide by cutting an artery in his arm in the courtroom causing serious blood loss. His partner awaits a life sentence in Iowa.
Atlantic City reports fires raging in woods and cranberry patches west of Elwood. The Atlantic Cranberry Company loses 15000 dollars as 275 acres of bog burn. the Lake bog also destroyed. Smoke was nearly suffocating in Elwood as fires continue.
An arrest in Detroit links a man who used the alias Thomas May to Rev Dr Rexford swindle to ex Governor Moses of South Carolina. He was identified by Cambridge, Massachusetts officers where he is wanted.
