Otho P. Skeen 70 father of Dr. F P Skeen Batavia died Oct 17 at Marion General Hospital after a monthlong illness. Funeral in Bucyrus Oct 19 with burial in Greensburg Ind. Masonic rites held Oct 18. He was a master mechanic for the New York Central Railroad and a member of the Scottish Rite 32nd degree. Survived by wife Beulah C. and daughter Julia Williams with grandchildren Patricia Ann and John Skeen. Dr Skeen’s office reopens Oct 24.
Miami University reports fall semester enrollment of 6937 students. Clermont County contributes 49 newcomers, up three from the previous year.
The grand jury probing Commissioner Don Ison's campaign statements met again and extended to a third day. Twelve witnesses testified and three more were called as Prosecutor Hill said more witnesses would appear, delaying the inquiry until Friday. Ison seeks reelection as a Democrat.
Five-county Cincinnati United Appeal progress reaches 81.5 percent of a 6.63 million goal after Oct 13 reports. Loveland district led residential effort at 156.3 percent. Williamsville area followed at 123.5 percent. Co-chairs include Vernon Silver and Kenneth Lemon.
John Staton 21 of Nicholsville died after a head-on collision on Amelia Olive Branch Rd near Olive Branch. The crash involved Jack Gregory 21 of Bethel and Phillip Lipps 41 of Amelia. Gregory faced second degree manslaughter charges with a hearing set for Oct 20.
Zenas Anstaett Republican county commissioner candidate won the Politician's Pleasure Horse Class at Clermont Western Saddle Club show. He donated his $10 prize to county home residents after also earning a blue ribbon. Schwartz took second and Ross third. other competitors included Kahle Halbisch and Hoht.
West Batavia proclaims Friday as Big Klu Day featuring Chicago White Sox first baseman Ted Kluszewski. He will attend the grand opening of The Big Klu Launderama next to The Courier on W Main St from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday Oct 21.
