Summary Justice of Olden Time in Connecticut Deer Law
In 1642 Connecticut restricted deer killing to seasons of plenty. A poor man faced a forty shilling fine split with the informer. when pressed, he offered payment in venison. The governor refused lax enforcement, the case went to trial, and a harsh public flogging ensued to illustrate summary justice in a colonial setting. The tale ends with a public display of punishment and moral outrage.
