Grand Jury Reports Nine True Bills in Clermont County

Clermont County Grand Jury session October 5 6 found nine true bills and ignored four cases after examining 30 witnesses. Names cited include William Curtis Aston Ed G Tumbleson Howard Shields Byron Shields Sid Waters John Willey James Wade Paul Schlager and more with charges ranging from forgery non support larceny to assault and weapon offenses. The panel urged a new jail facility and hearings continue before Common Pleas Judge Charles G White. Foreman Charles W Howell led twelve jurors and listed members from Batavia Owensville Milford Loveland and nearby townships.

Felicity Youth Shot During Squirrel Hunt

Emmet Bartlepp aged 16 suffers severe gunshot wounds to head and body while hunting on his parents Route 133 farm. He was with Awald Sievers 30 when separated in heavy brush. Sievers alerted local neighbors and a doctor who estimated over 50 shots entering the boy’s body.

Eastern Star Friendship Meeting At Batavia Chapter

A pleasant Eastern Star event named Friendship was held by Batavia Chapter on Monday night. Guests from Williamsburg Felicity Owensville Loveland and Cincinnati attended after the chapter closed a program followed by lunch for about 80 attendees.

Funeral notices for Mack Lewis of Ney Ohio

Mack Lewis aged 67 died at his Ney Ohio home on Wednesday September 28. Burial planned at Milford on October 8. He was the second son of the late Joseph and Hannah W Lewis. Survived by wife Ida son Sherman of Dayton one brother Lawrence of Jerry City three sisters Carrie Hatton Minnie Dawson and Mabel Wood ten grandchildren five great grandchildren. Dawson with Lawrence unable to attend funeral due to Lawrence illness. Services at Milford cemetery conducted by the Odd Fellows of Newtown. Lewis long time member.

Batavia P T A will meet Thursday evening at 7 30 in the school auditorium for the 1988 39 season kickoff. D A V Meeting in Batavia Armory With New Members

The regular meeting of the D A V of World War in Batavia Armory featured a surprise visit by Comrade Al Daniels State Adjutant and Treasurer. Committees planned a Forget-Me-Not Day drive for Disabled Veterans on November 5. Three more Vets joined the chapter this week with life memberships. A large turnout enjoyed refreshments and lunch.

River Downs Fall Meeting Opens at Ohio River Course

The River Downs Racing Association starts a 16 day Fall Meeting at the Ohio River course in Cincinnati on October 12. J C Brown reports all stalls nearly full with top class thoroughbreds, plus about 300 horses from Latonia. General Manager Edward P Strong says seven daily races will be offered and post time for the first race is 2 15 p.m.

The Fourth District American Legion and Legion Auxiliary conventions will convene in Batavia. The Auxiliary session is October 26 at the town hall with lunch at Batavia school 7.65 cafe. county officers will be installed at the Armory. The Legion convention follows October 30 at the school with lunch at the Armory.

Clermont Voters Face Many Local Special Questions

Clermont county voters in the November 8 general election will decide local option questions on beer and hard liquor in multiple subdivisions. School district levies are proposed in five areas, including Batavia, Felicity Franklin Consolidated, and Newtonsville. A Newtonsville bond issue for 23,000 plus 2.9 mills would fund an auditorium and related facilities, aided by a federal grant. New Richmond and Moscow also vote on a 3.6 mill and a 3 mill levy respectively.

Howard Clare lost a case against Effie McKibben estate in Bethel with Judge White finding no ownership in the building. In Brown County Judge Bagby ruled Clare not the common law husband of Effie McKibben and thus not entitled to half her estate.

Clermont County to Build New Jail With Federal Grant

A telegram says Clermont County received a $27,000 PWA grant for a new jail. County plans a $33,000 bond issue for the county’s share. Architects Hunt & Allen submitted plans in August. Site same as current jail location. Construction hinges on bond approval and future commissioners. The project aims to improve safety and reduce unemployment.
