A man spuriously fears a rattlesnake bite after a dark evening stumble. Neighbors rush to help, but the supposed venomous snake is revealed as a setting hen, leaving the bitten man relieved yet embarrassed by the false alarm.
Charley E. C. reports Zouaves stationed near Camp Redhouse under Rosecrans plan. Scouts bring in prisoners and Secesh property while Col Toland uses cattle and property seizures to enforce oath. Regiment drills five hours daily, improving marksmanship, with paymaster expected next week and weather turning cold then mild.
Virginia letter describes the 13th Indiana and the 2d Kentucky Regiment marching through rain and fog to Gauley, thinly held by rebels. They suffer mud and cold, form a coffee-drenched camp, then send six companies on a scout led by Major Wallace. four prisoners and tobacco captured. A Tennessee paper notes Andy Johnson’s harsh stance against secessionists and a rebel attack on his East Tennessee house.
