Broadcast of Germany's unconditional surrender triggers widespread celebrations in Ohio and Clermont County. Residents parade, cheer, suspend business, and claim peace as the happiest day yet. A band-led procession visits towns in the southern county with civic addresses and festive activities. Peace is urged as a world-wide outcome.
Batavia residents celebrated the German surrender with a mass turnout. A band played patriotic tunes, residents greeted friends with smiles, and a parade formed after addresses by Rev. Wilson and Hon. Charles C. Krams.
A Camp Lee veterinary unit outlines its work with 7 000 animals and six hospitals. The auxiliary reports on a new 200 000 dollar veterinary hospital, remount operations for 16 000 horses and mules, and local Civil War sites near Petersburg and the Crater, with ongoing quarantine lifting and hopes for the future.
A letter from Lieut. H. F. Walker of the Aux Remount Depot at Camp Lee Petersburg Va describes the call to entrain for overseas duty and the importance of soldiers voting while away. He notes he hopes to cast his ballot soon and recalls being unable to vote last fall.
Merri R., youngest son of the late J. O. Jonike of this place, died at Cincinnati City Hospital last Wednesday from an illness described in the report. The notice provides limited personal details and references the family’s bereavement.
A man died after illness lasting ten days while his wife lay ill in the hospital unaware of his death. She survives with a daughter and baby. Short services were held at the cemetery Friday afternoon led by Rev. Tilford and the Odd Fellows, and the body was placed in the vault.
County commissioners announce no meeting on November 4 and reschedule to November 18 due to election matters. About 860 a month’s business will be transacted at the next session.
All candidates must file their expense accounts with the county election clerk within ten days after the election. This is required by law. County candidates may spend 800 dollars for the first 56000 votes and 6 dollars for each additional 100. The Governor may spend 5000 dollars and other state officers 8000. Also notes coal production is falling by over a million tons.
The Ashburn family plans moving five deceased members from Batavia I O F cemetery to Union cemetery where a new lot is prepared. The moves include T Q Ashburn two wives a son and a daughter some interred for up to forty years. Lee Woods Union cemetery sexton will perform the relocation.
Last Sunday churches reopened for morning preaching as five weeks of restrictions eased. Many chose to stay away amid epidemic anxiety and small, scattered congregations formed. Officials urged limiting public gatherings and called for Board of Health action to enforce restrictions.
The Ohio War Savings Committee urges residents to buy War Savings Stamps to fund clothing subsistence and education for Buckeye soldiers returning from France. Authorities say it will take a year or more to muster out troops, so home front support must continue through intensified county drives.
James B. Scott of this place enlisted in the truck driver's service last week, passed the exam, and is to report to Macon Georgia for duty with about 60 days training before overseas assignment. Randolph Reynolds and A I Hassett, both from Batavia and Perintown respectively, also enlisted and will report soon. Mathew Martin Donough Loveland James Robert Carroll Blanchester No 6 and Jos Byres Loveland depart for Mineola New York to enter marine service.
William P. Hoban was arrested at Loveland on a charge of attempting to break into Brock Hardware Store. The grand jury had failed to indict. Military authorities at Camp Eastus Virginia claimed him as a deserter, after a confession to F A Brown Local Draft Board member. He was sent to Camp Eastus for military handling.
Harry Wilson son of Alfred Wilson of Stonelick died at his father home after a two year illness at age 26. No funeral services were held. Burial at Laurel. The mother passed away about a year ago.
