Fire at Davis House Stables Ravages Batavia City Center

A devastating blaze in Batavia destroys Davis House stables and the Law Building, endangering the Courier office and nearby structures. Citizens, firefighters, and volunteers fight flames through the night, saving the Courier, with wind shifts aiding containment and numerous properties damaged or lost.

Accidental Shooting Wounds Two Men During Quail Hunt

Last Saturday Caleb T Hadley and Tanac Abernathy of Monterey were struck by a shotgun blast from Moody McEl fresh while crossing Hadley’s land. Hadley suffered thirteen shot in his hat and minor head injury, Abernathy was shot in the chest and greatly disabled. Reports say the same youth shot a cow of J K Hartman that day. No arrests yet amid rumors.

Blacksmith in Clermontville Involved in Fatal Brawl

Albert Lewis, once a Batavia resident, attacked his companion Seigert with a blacksmith’s rasp after a drinking spree near New Richmond. Seigert died after a relapse the next day. Lewis fled east through Felicity and remained at large. The event ends with a moral on liquor. The piece also notes the golden wedding of Michael Behymer and his wife at Locust Corner on November 5, 1885 with about forty guests receiving gifts and well wishes.
