Miss Anna Quinby of Edenton led a campaign to keep the Edenton post office from closure to rural service. Her appeal framed around temperance work and extensive correspondence, prompting the Department to revoke the discontinuance order and affirm the office remains open as a key local hub.
A state law requires tin cups for schoolchildren as part of the outfit, linking to a worn proverb about sharing drink. The narrator recalls old soldiers singing about shared canteens and recounts a traveler at a wayside well warned by children that the cup’s handle area is granny's place, a caution about slips between cup and lip.
A surprise celebration honored Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Slade on their 84th wedding anniversary at Elk Lick. Friends gathered from their domain to enjoy a dinner and gifts, renewing the couple’s youth in a joyful, neighborly event.
The Courier reports the death of Louis J. Griffis at his Springfield home on November 3 1906 at about seventy. He was a former foreman in a tanning establishment and a longtime 59th Ohio soldier noted for generosity and steadiness. He leaves a widow, several grown children, and two sisters with his burial at Springfield conducted by the local G A R post.
Grace Fridman of New Richmond died at home after a brief illness on the 26th ultime. Fifth daughter of Franklin and Milly Fridman she was highly educated, attending Parker's academy and Ohio Wesleyan University. She taught at Antioch College before resigning to avoid harming others dependent on her salary. She was active in church and society and beloved by friends for devotion and fidelity.
The M E Church gathering featured a Holy Communion service led by President Fischer and Rev Dawson's revival themes. Rev Newton urged evangelistic responsibility while Rev Dalby urged personal outreach. Rev Fischer was re elected president and Dawson treasurer. A marriage announcement notes Eugene Hughes and Carrie Caldwell wed November 6 1966 at the M E parsonage. couple to live in South Lebanon and work in telegraphy and exchange service.
General Henry C. Corbin, recently retired with high honors, arrived in Batavia from Wilmington to visit family and vote locally. He toured the town with Judge Nichols and was hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Ashburn and Mrs. Jane Corbin, greeting many friends.
All Day Diversion by the Ladies of the Pressbyterian society will hold an all day quilting at the Chapel on Wednesday November 14. Dinner will be served at 12 o clock at the home of Mrs Geo Baum on Main Street for 15 cents. All are invited.
A gate-keeper at a toll station blocked a motor car as a pole descended striking a passerby described as a pretty girl. The incident is reported with emphasis on the danger from the tolling barrier and the dramatic obstruction.
Sunday last Mr. Burkhold a Cincinnati capitalist with wife and two daughters rode to Mt. Carmel gate. Gate operator Edwards pulled down the pole, striking Miss Burkhold and stunning her. Burkhold rushed to a physician then home. he plans to sue Edwards and the company for the incident. The toll dispute centers on a five cent extra charge after a thirty cent toll.
J R Woodlief his wife and daughter Mrs R W C Gregg left yesterday for Woodlief Kansas to visit his brother William. Woodlief runs a large sheep ranch with extensive stock raising and farming operations, and the farm post office bears his name. He will be away several weeks and looks forward to a pleasant trip.
