Missing Clermont Township Official Found After Mysterious Disappearance
John L. Barkley, longtime Monroe township treasurer, was found in a Cincinnati boarding house in a dazed state with a fractured skull. He could not recall events, but police suspect foul play after he was seen with about $4,000 earlier and clothing showed signs of recent cleaning. Authorities learned Barkley had vanished two months ago amid rumors of murder on a wharf boat. his family had believed him dead while his estate in Laurel appeared disposed of. His brother and city investigators connected him to a prior drunkenness arrest, suggesting he may have been robbed and injured during a failed attempt to stage his death.
