In Jamestown, George McLaughlin postmaster and local Republican leader was shot and killed during a prank gone wrong. Ed Ginn, his friend, fired at an alley noise after a prank involving a fish-hook and string startled Ginn’s wife. Ginn was shaken. coroner’s inquest delayed until his recovery.
Mrs. Jennie Bryan will present a paper on Dickens Land on Friday evening May 19 in the Presbyterian church during a ladies tea. The reading will revisit beloved Dickens characters including Aunt Betsy Trotwood Mr Dick Steerforth Little Nell and many others with Mrs. Carrie Kain Belle Kain Nellie Moore and Molite McDonald directing.
David Matthews of Williamsburg appeared in probate court on Saturday for sanity evaluation. The 41 year old tiler and landscape gardener claimed a ring of counterfeiters uses a telescope like instrument to paralyze detectives. He, a former member of the 73d Ohio, is married with two children, declared harmless but demented, and was certified to Athens asylum for treatment.
The Clermont county grand jury returned ten indictments against as many people in the Angela case, while Batavia papers mock Adams county taxes and reform efforts. The article notes no shooting or cutting charges in these indictments and questions the specifics of what the indictments were for.
Three boys aged around eight to sixteen caught a 16 pound catfish in Hast Fork near Halington after wading and chasing minnows. Johnnie Kincaid and the Adams brothers pulled the fish by the gills and secured it with trot line before parading the trophy through town.

In North Liberty Adams County two 15 year old boys Ray Chambers and Arthur Thompson quarreled over a girl and failed friendship led to violence. Chambers armed with club and knife attacked Thompson in a store yard striking with a club thrice and stabbing four times possibly wounding a lung. No arrests yet another tragedy within close families.
The case of Charles Hervey in Ashtabula County raised questions about time served. Sentenced to four years for burglary, seven months had passed when the circuit court ordered a new trial. The Supreme Court later reversed, allowing execution of the original sentence, while officials credited the time served, causing debate on whether a retrial or new start was required.
James Work of Newtonsville seeks a divorce from Louisa Work Hill alleging three years of absence and that she has contracted another marriage with Jacob Hill of Mulberry. He states she lives with Hill as his wife in Mulberry and cites the grounds for seeking freedom.
The Batavia woman’s club will meet at Mrs. Parrott’s home on Saturday May 2 at 2 30 pm. Ada Riley of Cincinnati and Nellie Babbitt of Price Hill will address the group and invite presidents of New Richmond Clermontville Milford Loveland and other unfederated clubs to attend. The Monterey church ladies aid society held a social at the Burns home with white and green decor elegant dining room settings and generous refreshments.
J Hardekopf, an elderly hermit from Clermont near Milford, writes a touching letter to H Eb Smith, humane society secretary in Cincinnati, detailing years of hardship, failed family search, and rejections by old age homes over his Clermont residence. He requests aid as he endures rheumatism, neuralgia, asthma, vertigo, and lumbago. He confesses to accusations of murder which were quelled by a victim’s confession.
About a year after a major blast, King's Mills again blew up on Friday sending the powder store into the air and shattering nearby buildings. No cause was found and no one was injured though damage tops five hundred pounds. The incident recalls prior coverage blaming Spanish spies with little evidence.
Antony Buerkle and Antoinette Deeringer wed in Germany on May 25 1849 and after fifteen years in America settled in Cincinnati then Owensville. They ran a hotel for decades and raised eleven children, ten living. Plans for their 50th anniversary include feasting dancing and songs from both fatherland and adopted country. A large circle of friends offers congratulations.
West Union Defender editor Mr Crawford faces a $10000 damages suit from a former Adams county resident who alleges publications about her were false. Crawford mocks the case in his defense, noting a mistaken Jennie Mathews and a mix up of two J M individuals. Settlement talks offered at $500 but he aims for five cents.
George McMurchy and F F Talley announce purchase of the New Richmond Independent. Townsley Day Townsley retire. The office, founded 1869 by D B Croshaw, passes to progressive New Richmond businessmen McMurphy and Talley, with plans to publish a locally focused paper.
The Williamsburg oil gusher that burned into East Fork waters last week has resumed, with company officers leaving, funds depleted, and locals speculating the bubbles came from a catfish or stump speaker rather than a true geyser.
The Milford Enterprise reports a Milford hen produced an egg as large as a goose egg containing another perfectly formed egg inside. The second egg remains unbroken and may contain yet another egg. The hen belongs to Fred Mordt and could fatten many nests if bred.
The Wiggonsville Eu terpe band opens Englewood Park with a gala ceremony on May 29 featuring local ministers addresses and a concert. Band members have invested hundreds of dollars in park setup uniforms and equipment and will host free Saturday concerts with public invitations.
Rev. Payne of the M E church dies in New York in the 70th year. He led dedication ceremonies in Hillsboro and held major M E pulpits across the State. A former church secretary and Ohio Wesleyan University president he was linked to a bishopric. The Hillsboro Gazette criticizes city officials for undercutting newspaper rates by sharing ordinances. It vows to print ordinances free until legal rates are restored.
Auditors Davis Viermont Jennings Brown and Lewis raised values for the C G P and P V railroads by 200 dollars per mile. The P V main track appraisal stands at 2200 per mile with rolling stock 030 per mile and depot buildings 400. The C G P is valued at 800 per mile for main track and 525 for rolling stock and buildings. Gross assessments: C P V 60000 and C G P 20518. Tax on the road portion in the school district is 2.7. Assessments for B VU and Little Miami to follow.
A fur dealer in Adams county paid 3500 for skins of coons minks muskrats and related small animals taken by hunters. The State pheasantry near London in Madison county is taking shape with 300 to 400 Mongolian pheasants and expected to produce about 4 000 young birds for statewide distribution. The superintendent's residence is nearly complete, water will feed fish ponds this spring, and grounds are being transformed into a park. The previously released birds are thriving with strong growth.

On June 1 at Columbia the Sixth district delegations will gather in the Supreme Court clerk's office at 2 30 PM to select one member each for Credentials resolutions rules and order of business permanent organization and State central committee. Committees report to the convention at 4 PM and then meet to transact business at specified venues including Senate chamber State secretary's office Chittenden hotel and Nell House parlor B parlor 147.
Maron E. Applegate a 94 year old school teacher from Marathon and Georgia A. Smith of Marathon share a ceremony with J. W. Burdasal Joseph Reney a 28 year old farmer from Newtonville and Miss Ida Mullen a 21 year old from Woodville. G. G. Holter a 27 year old school teacher from Pt. lanhel and Miss Irene H. Holter of Pt. Isabel officiated by Rev. Shanor. The Kanad’s tally reaches 76 for the year.
A note in the political column reports Clermont county auditor John W Davis seeking a State auditor nomination at the Democratic convention in southern Ohio. Also mentioned are the Smith sisters, popular locally, who will sing at Hillsboro on the 234th.
The M. E. church in Owensville completes extensive repair and remodeling of the church edifice and will formally open for worship next Sunday May 21. A large audience is anticipated and Rev. T. E. Price will conduct the services.
William Marshall sues Harriet Griffin for five thousand dollars alleging defamatory reluisks. The case includes claims of damages and seeks redress in the common pleas court.
Assessors list retirements by precincts including Utter Neville Creager Bushman Swick Laugh Frazee Halr Stinkle and others. A movement seeks funds for a headstone for Jala K Parser founder and longtime Clermont Academy head, with subscriptions invited from Bethel and Clermont supporters.
The C. G. & P. reports six schedule trains are running toward Viaitel over Lick Run at California station. The viaduct is not yet completed but an outage occurred when a collision damaged the line. All internal rails and ties in the area require work and a tract of land near Fousuulg was purchased for future operations.

The obituary notes Amalia Amhrose S Clemente born July in Amelia in 1856. She immigrated from California after initial business ventures in Rouen and later worked as a clerk in the mercantile trade. Services were held Saturday at the residence of Joseph White, with burial in M. E. cemetery.
The Western Tobacco Journal reports demand remains strong with rising prices as buyers bid aggressively for mostly low grade tobacco and few hogsheads. Expect receipts to rise with a strong market next week and a likely June peak, aided by heavy competition among buyers and traditional rotations in sales. Ex-Commissioner Rex and his grandson Dr Walton of Milford were seen discussing business in town yesterday.
