A fragment from Clermont Courier presents Ernest and a speaker as schoolmates recalling youth near a mill and brook. The verse laments lost happiness and farewell to Ernest with memory of brighter days and dreams of the past.
The May 4 special train from Wheeling to Baltimore featured ten cars with modern improvements and elegant appearance. An extra locomotive led the way. passengers viewed Moundsville Indian mound and four tunnels including the 2600 foot Board Tree Tunnel. several cars went dark in the tunnel as editors praised the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad officers.
Passengers on a central train discuss politics as editors from Ashtabula and the South mingle. The trip includes a stop at Fairmont’s 600 foot iron bridge and Tygart's Valley Falls, with a 1751-born pioneer and family stirring interest among travelers.
In 1802 Rev John Collins moved from New Jersey to Williamsburg and acquired land from Gen Lytle for several farms. By 1803 Collins Higbee and McCollum settled, forming the Jersey settlement later known as Collins’ settlement. The first log school house stood near the Bether meeting-house cemetery. North of Ulrey's Run, heads of families included Collins Higbee McCollum and many New Jersey arrivals. west of Ulrey's Run, several local families emerged with ties to Ireland Virginia and New Jersey. Regular circuit preaching began by 1804 1805 at Bethel and Collins school-lease. Notable settlers and their homes are described along Sugar-tree and the East Fork, including Strickland Page Blair McIntosh and others with varied fortunes and legacies.
The correspondent recalls overheard political banter in Charleston about Breckinridge and Forney, plus a slave narrative exchange involving Massa Vincent and Marian Vincent, illustrating racial humor and antebellum tensions in public discourse.
Instructions advise immediate cold water immersion then coating the burn with flour using a dry container. Eat or drink nothing but water until pain subsides, then light diet as it heals. The piece also includes a humorous exchange about a dead aunt and a drunken man riding a pig.
A Clermont Courier letter argues ministers may address politics, denounces slavery as sin, and calls clergy to openly discuss political topics. It contends Republicans largely support abolition and urges preachers to lead in moral and political debate, criticizing Democrats as uninformed or silent on the issue.
