At Cir County Court House workers on the third floor loosened an iron joist as a wall loosened and collapsed. Memry Stegemann was crushed beneath the debris and died shortly after rescue. Several others narrowly escaped, though one man’s head and face were badly injured. The accident occurred in the burned building near the former judges’ consultation room.
Four gunmen robbed the Medicine Valley Bank in Hanper Kansas yesterday morning. After the cashier Geo Geppert was killed and president E W Payne fatally wounded, locals pursued and captured the robbers three miles from town. The mob hanged three of the perpetrators at the town edge. two identified as Caldwell officials were among the group. The other two were cowboys from "T 5" Tange.
The Treasury's monthly debt statement shows a $5,232,075 drop in public debt for April and $87,060,473 for the first ten months of the fiscal year. Total debt stands at $1,464,030,733 with $399,755,205 cash in Treasury and $152,652,973 available after current liabilities. Gold holdings total $196,000,000 with $44,000,000 in gold certificates and $101,000,000 outstanding in certificates. Silver dollars in Treasury total 130,314,065, up about 500,000 this month, while silver certificates outstanding are $116,374,231.
The supreme lodge of Knights of Pythias remains in session and will adjourn tonight. The next meeting is set for the second Tuesday in June 1886 in Toronto. New officers elected include Halvor Nelson as supreme secretary of the endowment rank, S. J. Wiley as supreme master of the exchequer, General J. R. Carnahan of Indianapolis named major general of the uniform rank, and J. F. Schumate of Cincinnati as adjutant general.
Shortly before midnight a bomb with a lit fuse and six pounds of giant powder was hurled onto the porch of the Crawford House Colorado Springs. It shattered doors and windows of the hotel and nearby houses. Authorities suspect a saloonist aimed at the hotel proprietor active in liquor traffic suppression.
Joseph Farrell, once a prosperous oyster dealer, leaped from the bridge at night and is believed drowned. A letter found on the bridge says he ruined himself through bucket shop speculation and lost all hope. He was nearly sixty and left behind grown children.
A male patient escaped from the asylum this afternoon and swam across the river in a nude state before heading into the countryside. Keepers are in pursuit as the subject remains at large with reports of ongoing search efforts.
Maprio April 30 report says government troops overtook insurgent chieftain Mangado in a fight toward the French frontier. Mangado and seven of his men were killed. Four prisoners were captured, and fourteen officers and men who had recently disappeared from Santa Coloma were recaptured.
May 1 Kingston Ontario reports large gold discovery in Kaladar township about forty miles from the city. Considerable dust and samples have been brought here for assessment and prospecting activity accelerates.
Kalamazoo Michigan April 30 a county poorhouse near Hartford burned at 2 am killing fourteen inmates and injuring others in the same wing. Names include James Johnson Henry Baker Benj Bogardus Sawyer Sargeant Fred Echenberger Myers Bolden Deborah Gravatt Caroline Shearer Caroline Lang Mrs Curtiss and Mrs Wilson and her daughter. One caretaker's daughter survived. County arranged temporary care for remaining inmates.
The April 30 powder magazine blast at San Antonio Bay Havana killed twenty one and wounded seventy nine. Eight of twenty seven soldiers escaped unhurt while the debris caused injuries citywide. The explosion damaged San Jose warehouse Planter’s Warehouse churches and many homes as a second shock followed. The gas company expects to relight the city tomorrow.
Cincinnati reports Allen Ingalls a notorious criminal and resurrectionist who murdered Beverly Taylor and her elderly family near Avondale with Ben Johnson and sold bodies to the Ohio Medical College. He hanged himself by tying a blanket strip to a cell grate and strangling himself.
Fort Keroves Montana April 30. The season’s worst snow storm raged yesterday across the Yellowstone Valley for 24 hours burying ground eighteen inches deep. Fear grows that thaw will swell the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers, risking damage to settlers and property from Minnesota to the Rocky Mountains.
A severe tornado at Kas April 30, described as the most destructive wind-storm here in a decade, demolished the nearly finished Christian Church, wrecked Hedden and White's store Kentner's new house and Long and Co lumber sheds, unroofed four or five dwellings and blew others down.
Benjamin Wallace, wealthy soap manufacturer, vanished after leaving his lawyer Geo W McAdams office on Tuesday morning with a stranger. He carried a large sum of money and valuable jewelry and foul play is feared. Wallace is reportedly worth nearly a million and his business is thriving.
A mob at St Albans hanged Scott Hill and Brownlow Hill, robbers who shot and killed Albert Woods and mortally wounded A. J. Woods. Charles Spurlock escaped with officers after the men confessed the Monday night crime.
Daniel Horn a mill sawyer at a White Haven area mill slipped and fell before a rapidly moving saw. Pieces of his body were hurled by the blade, killing him. Affected workers were warned by fragments of his remains. He leaves a family in White Haven.
The Greeley Flag ship Thetis departed New York May 1 bound for Arctic regions. Secretary Chandler Secretary Lincoln General Hancock and other notables joined the voyage to Sandy Hook aboard the gunboat Tallapoosa. Harbor salutes greeted the departing craft.
In Philadelphia on April 30 a jury awarded Clarence W. Layer, a six year old boy, $10,000 damages against the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad Company for injuries after being run over on the road.
A train wreck on the Owensboro and Nashville accommodation line near Russellville Kentucky killed Sam Page of Louisville the engineer and severely injured Mike Costello the foreman.
Fire rages in Middletown New York and surrounding mountains as strong winds drive flames through Shawangunks and Catskills. Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania battles blazes with its residents, destroying timber, bridges, and livestock. Blue Mountains near Washington New Jersey blaze amid smoke heavy enough to darken towns, while Ashland and Emporium areas report extensive fires threatening homes and mills.
Harrisonville residents report James Maxwell a 27 year old druggist from Westline shot Newton Lafoor through a bedroom window. Lafoor's wife and three children hid inside as alerts ring and search parties form. Maxwell fled to Paola Kansas then returned and was jailed under guard amid fears of lynching. The dispute stems from Maxwell courting Lafoor's sister.
Exploring Alaska and San Francisco May 2 The U S revenue steamer Corwin sails tomorrow for Alaska with Lieutenant Doty and party. They are detailed by the Treasury Department to explore a new river discovered last year by Lieutenant Stoney, who departed three weeks ago on the schooner Ounalaska to continue the exploration. The move to follow Stoney stirs comment in naval circles.
