Fire at Amelia Self Service closes market on Main Street

Fire at the Amelia Self Service at 29 Main St. Amelia last Thursday forced closure. Owner Lester Hausman left at 6 35 p m and learned at 7 p m that the building was on fire. Firemen confined the blaze to the rear meat department. merchandise suffered heavy smoke and heat damage. Cleanup will start soon and shelves will be restocked after repairs.

Bid Opening Set On SR 48 Bridges

Ohio Department of Highways will open bids in Goshen Township Clermont County for 1.4 miles of bridges replacement with conduit. Traffic rerouted via Paxton Road Guinea Pike and SR 28. Estimated cost 110000 dollars and completion by September 30.

Oldest Planners Step Down in Clermont County

Ed Miller, the commission's only charter member since May 1957, and Pete Hecktor, in place since May 1961, resign from the Clermont County Planning Commission. Both say they have served long enough and agree the planning era has progressed significantly.

Murder Hearing Continued and Cruelty Conviction Reported

A murder hearing in Clermont County was postponed to May after Judge Lawrence Carlier granted a defense request for a continuance. Mrs. Etta M. Shoop, 67, of Edenton, received a 90 day sentence at the Cincinnati Workhouse for alleged cruelty to animals involving horses and ponies on a Batavia area farm. Detective notes describe 60 animals on site with 22 surviving when investigated. Frank Meisman faces a jury trial May 21 for cruelty to animals amid reports of twelve dead cattle on his Lindale-Laurel Rd. farm.

Police Chief Cleared In Assault Case

Batavia Police Chief Ward was cleared of an assault and battery charge in county court. The case stemmed from an officer removing a hand from a coat pocket during a disputed stop. The trial against Hackman for assault and interfering with a police officer is set for Aug. 11.
