A humorous piece follows Jones a self important bachelor in love with a married dentist's wife. He first brags about charm then is humiliated during a staged visit to the dentist who exposes his vanity with a painful tooth extraction that reveals the wife’s amusement.
A rambunctious Yankee arrives in Portland by packet from Passamaquoddy. In the Eagle Coffee House he confuses dinner time with landing, disturbs the Collector of the Port, and provokes startled exchanges with the sleeping official and locals, ending with comic miscommunication.
A traveler mistaken for a drinker at Portlan'-Eagle Coffee House ends up at the Custom House after bungled banter with a collector. The episode includes misrecognition, a collapse of propriety, and a quip about a general drink. The bowie knife notes follow, with Bowie famed for independence era bravery and a notorious duel.
