County assessors told last week at the Batavia tax office that only half of their salaries will be paid upon completion of listing property for taxation with the balance due in August due to fund shortages. Budgets show varied results with new buildings boosting returns in some areas and hidden assets discovered in others.
Local citizens urged to apply for Farmers Institutes with state aid. Applications must reach the Agricultural Commission in Columbus by June 1. Clermont county towns Williamsburg New Richmond Felicity Bethel Milford and Laurel have already applied. A conference at the court house will gather former institute officers led by C R Wagner Deputy Director of Institutes to discuss matters.
The I O O F Rebekah State Assembly will hold its annual convention in Cincinnati May 18 for a week. About 800 delegates are expected from across the state. events take place in Temple Hall at Seventh and Elm. Miss Elizabeth Mareh of this place serves as district representative for a second term.
The Woman's Club invites members to its third guest day of the year at Mrs. Frank Davis home on Saturday March 28. Roll call theme is The Psalms Hymn with readings by Mrs Barr and music by Mrs Lavender plus discussion on The Theory of Industry in the Old Testament.
The Batavia I O O F lodge shows prosperity with larger attendance and improved lodge rooms. Indianapolis drill master Mr Teckenbrock has trained the three branches in floor movements and work, impressing with his ability. Rebekahs practice mid day while subordinate and encampment drill in evenings, inviting all Odd Fellows to join.
County commissioners opened bids in a special session for bonds to fund road work. Funds will finance pikes with receipts directed to abutting property holders and township compliance. Farn & Son earned bonds worth 50,000 as the prepared bids are listed.

The Williamsburg township Sunday school convention will be held in the A B church on Sunday night March 29. Good music and speakers have been secured for the occasion and a day of pleasure is promised for attendees. Supt BE B Holmes will be in charge. H D Final of Duluth Minn who has been a guest of Mr and Mrs F D Warren of the hill top has left to join his family in Europe after a year abroad to finish their daughter's musical education.
County commissioners are criticized for skipping duties on the infirmary bid opening. Notices list bids for groceries and supplies due April 1 1914 at Batavia Ohio with delivery options and required samples. Louis I Craver is named as infirmary superintendent overseeing the process.
The Governor designates April 2 as Arbor Day and asks all Ohio schools to hold exercises and teach pupils about plants and birds. Each child is urged to plant a shrub, tree, or seed and to proclaim love for the outdoor world through song and speech. Schools in townships join in the observance.

John Boring of Bethel aged about 65 hanged himself in his wood shed last Wednesday morning after a hard winter with scarce work and high produce costs. He left a widow and four children. Coroner Parkbiser held an inquest after the discovery by his wife at breakfast.
The N and W railroad bought a rail laying crane that lays steel rails with far greater speed. The crane follows the rails as they are laid while workers drive spikes. The article argues that machines and civil service will soon render many men obsolete.
A Batavia mass meeting at the armory last Thursday promoted Ohio National Guard recruitment for Company K. Capt. Meyer and Lieutenants Bechtel and Scott led drills while Major Hubler Senator Roudebush and Rev. Burdsall spoke on enlistment benefits. Five youths joined, seven underage signed parent consent blanks, and Captains Hancock and Patti son attended. If recruiting stalls, the armory may close.
The notice warns that blind relief rules change often and urges all entitled residents to apply to the county for calculations to set the levy for the blind fund. It notes less than $30 in the fund, mentions possible diversion from other funds, and states no relief will be paid until 1916 with levy in June and payments after. Applicants needing relief should act promptly and contact Rice Livery Barn for automobile service.
