The last reception of the season by the ladies and society of the Presbyterian church will be held at Mrs. John S. Parrott’s residence on Friday evening March 26 from 2 o’clock until 4 o’clock. All are invited and an elegant luncheon will be served.
Full list shows candidates by party for positions in Williamsburg Union Batavia Moscow Wayne Jackson Monroe Goshen Felicity Neville Washington Tate Rethel Bethel etc. Includes mayors treasurers trustees clerks assessors constables and school boards across Democratic Republican and Populist tickets with designated precincts and roles.
A published slate lists Milford figures including Ed Hughes Mulberry Marion Knott and John P Friend as Democratic nominees for trustees treasurer and other roles with names like E C Shumard Fred Terwillegar Jr T J Scott and A B Applegate. A Washington D. H. worker named Johnson wandered into a Five Points revival in Fayette county. He delivered a heartfelt prayer that stirred the crowd, prompting the white preacher to eject him and have him arrested for disturbing the meeting. The next day a local justice dismissed the charge, noting jealousy and pique influenced the arrest.
Republican township primary held at opera hall last Saturday selected L. M. Dawson as chairman and W. E. Nichols as secretary. About 80 votes were cast nominating Louis Golsch for Trustee James Lindsey for Treasurer and John B. Slade for Assessor. New Richmond council primary at opera hall Saturday night with 150 votes. Geo Green H M Day Charles Shepherd for Council and George W Castlen as Cemetery Trustee. Board of Education three years D W Parks Henry Wulf. two years C F Hera.
Dr J C Weaver died at his Batavia home on Thursday morning March 18 1897 after months of illness. Born 1829 on the Batavia homestead, he practiced dentistry with his brother Joseph and served in the 153d Ohio volunteers. He later worked in Washington as a Treasury clerk before returning home to rebuild on Main Street. He married Dora Brock in 1884. His Masonic and G A R funeral included Rev George W Morris and a large attendance from Cincinnati London Urbandale and Urbank.

Jos P. Smith is named Director of the Bureau of American Republics succeeding Clin ton Furbish. The appointment, made by Cleveland, follows Furbish’s resignation by request. Smith, an expert with figures and language skills, is praised as well deserved and gratifying to Clermont friends.
Albert Shorten committed death by own action at his hotel in Richmond Indiana last week found dead in bed by hotel servants He was a son of John Shorten of Loveland and brother of Conductor Benjamin Shorten and Engineer Samuel Shorten The remaps were interred at Milford.
People flee to house tops as floods submerge acres and destroy homes. Rescue tugs and steamers work to save stranded families while thousands of stock die and property is ruined. Weather worsens damage, with broken roads and dismantled bridges adding to hardship.
Joe Lowry of Woodstock and Charles Nedgepath, both colored, fought a pistol duel at Aunt Mimia’s home, Lowry’s mother in law. Lowry was shot in the lungs above the heart. Hedgepath was shot in the mouth and arm and fled. Hedgepath not yet captured. Lowry likely to die.
Prof. 8. L. Turnipseed, Williams burg superintendent, plans a normal school in Williams burg to start May 10 with eight teachers including his brothers. the educator lists a strong record and cites former Goshen service and pupil success. article also promotes Ayer s Hair Vigor as a refined fluid hair product.
Gilbert Cox of Loveland awoke to burglars at 3 am and fired through a window, wounding a dark assailant who later fled a toppled tree. Marshal Martin arrested the wounded man, who bore a revolver and a newspaper clipping about prior theft. The same night George Smitty’s trousers were rifled. the suspect claimed to be George Smith of Cincinnati seeking water.
At a special session, numerous contracts were awarded for flood damages repairs on bridges and roads in Batavia, Union, Miami, Franklin, Wayne, Williamsburg, Jackson, Tate, and Monroe townships. Named contractors include Wyamer, Leming, Ernest, Goodwin, Burger Bros., Hickey, Donley, Applegate, Rush, Tate, Kayser, Reed, Bigham, Marshall, Maham, Harlow, Conover, Daugherty & Chandler, with sums listed per project and details on surveyors and engineers.

Tatman and Taylor from this place sold ten hogsheads of tobacco at Bodmann warehouse last week for 9.49 and 10.00 dollars averaging 970 dollars per hogshead. The top lot was three hogsheads at 13.75 dollars each. Total weekly sales reached 1,907 dollars.
Ten head of thoroughbred horses in Harrison and Bourbon counties Kentucky developed glanders and health authorities ordered their destruction. State law requires killing animals with glanders but offers no compensation to the owner.
