From Sir James Ross's notes a winter at Port Leopold is described with two ships moored 200 yards apart and snow forts linking them. The crew built snow observatories, held schools, played games, and trapped white foxes with copper collars to aid rescue efforts. The party cut a 50 foot wide canal two and a half miles long, drilled through thick ice, and drifted south to Greenland before reaching Woolwich.
