Printed weekly by A.M. Gest and L.D. Morris. Subscriptions cost one dollar seventy five cents yearly in advance two dollars if paid within the year and two dollars fifty cents if unpaid after year end. OC advertisements inserted at usual rates.
A long list of general acts and amendments passed by the Ohio General Assembly. Items include provisions to regulate banking and currency, extend penalties, establish or modify offices such as Attorney General and township assessor, adjust chancery procedures, and address public works, canals, weights and measures, and education. Names of dates and acts cited indicate numerous legal reforms and organizational changes.
A lengthy act creates the Ohio State Board of Agriculture to foster farming, libraries for schools, and record preservation. It sets member duties, annual meetings in Columbus, reporting to the General Assembly, and repeals previous agricultural statutes while preserving rights and obligations. The measure lists numerous officials and counties associated with the new board. An accident note reports Miss Sarah Rider of Lebanon drowning in a well.
The 1846 Ohio act creates county or district agricultural societies with constitutions and boards, awarding premiums for soil and crop improvements, manures, stock, and domestic articles. Subsidies to eligible counties are limited to a per-inhabitant cap and a maximum grant, with funds drawn from county treasuries upon verified contributions.
The Richmond duel report states John Hampden Pleasants died at 2 a.m. from pistol and sword wounds inflicted by Tuomas Rirellis Jr after a public quarrel between editors. Ritchie and Pleasants met across the river with pistols, swords, and a cane as the confrontation escalated. Pleasants died from multiple gunshot wounds and a sword wound.
The Herald recounts a Friday insurrection on Hewitt Hearn Co's plantation ten miles below New Orleans along the Mexican Gulf Railway. About seventy enslaved men defied white overseers, killing one and wounding others before a pursuing party and local hunters halted the revolt. Planters formed a court and ordered severe flogging for male slaves. seven or eight ringleaders remained in the woods.
The piece reports Millerism spreading with fanatical Second Advent beliefs causing divorces and mob threats. It cites Cincinnati and Northern Indiana letters noting supposed immortality doctrines and imminent spring predictions, plus odd anecdotes about a runaway locomotive and a novel clothes-drying device from the East.
