Sir John Franklin Pioneer of Arctic Discovery

A biographical sketch recalls Sir John Franklin born 1786 in Lincolnshire. It traces his naval career from midshipman to flag rank, Arctic expeditions with Ross and Buchan, and the doomed 1845 search voyage aboard Erebus and Terror. It notes his marriages to Eleanor Ann Porden and Lady Jane Franklin, knighthood in 1829, governorship of Van Diemen’s Land, and the lasting mystery of his fate with continuing expeditions in 1848 and later assignments.
