Openings for naval and army enlistment draw large crowds. A thousand men lined up at St Louis recruiting offices last week, with more applicants daily in Manila and other cities. Public support for Philippines policy remains firm and ready for any government call.
The New Richmond Independent reports that at the last council meeting the shade trees were ordered trimmed to improve street lighting. A gang has worked for days, drawing complaints about careless trimming and removal of trees that do not obstruct light. while the idea is sound, judgment is urged on which trees to trim and how.

Wilford Snider, about 23, a Cincinnati native living on the Joseph Kidd farm near Batavia, died Monday night after shooting himself through the temple. Suffering from consumption and severe despondency, he borrowed a revolver in town, returned home, and ended his life. He will be buried from his home with services by Rev. Bilman of the Presbyterian church.
Last week in Xenia twenty eight inmates confined in the workhouse were released by the board directors on condition they immediately leave the town. The unusual action came after the city council refused to pass the appropriation for the institution's maintenance.

Hulick Terrace hosted a lawn fete by the Presbyterian furnishing society last Friday night. Guests in stylish attire filled the smooth walks for a delightful evening with refreshments serving in dining rooms and rising fundraising totals. The weather was cool and pleasant, and business men joined in, as music from Judge Hulick's household provided piano accompaniment.
The happy couple George O Neal, an insurance agent with Union Central Life, and his bride were married at the Wes. Sam Mowers home on Washington street on Thursday afternoon. The ceremony was performed by Rev. KE P. Gilchrist with Mayme Emkant as bridesmaid and Sam Haynes as best man. The house was decorated with palms, daisies and roses and guests enjoyed dinner before the couple departed in a rice shower.
The Georgetown District Epworth League eighth convention opened Thursday afternoon June 5 with Rev. I N Price leading the devotional. Reports showed 47 chapters with 2113 senior members and 7 junior groups in the district. Officers were elected for the coming year including Miss Charlotte Boyer president and Miss Anna McNutt treasurer, with events and addresses shaping the program through Friday sessions.

Low and medium grades fetch satisfactory prices while top grades lag. foreign trade supports cheap grades though overall prices fluctuate.
