Keith Huntley aged 6 stood for two hours speechless as a six foot black snake fixed a hypnotic gaze. Grandfather Alex Huntley searched for him in Marathon where the boy lived. The boy reportedly encountered the snake while playing and could not call for help.
Stanley A. C and Batavia delivered key upsets Sunday in Clermont County League play. Stanley A. C. beat Williamsville 6 to 5 for its first win, while Batavia shut out New Richmond 7 to 0. Moler pitched superbly for Batavia with three singles allowed and three double plays by the infield.
The state examiner’s report on County Surveyor Miles Deal commends his office for diligent leadership, conservative expense handling, and updated practices under gasoline tax distributions. It notes contracts and estimates are kept up to date and that new duties have been added since the law change.
Belated recognition for heroism during the Colorado State Penitentiary riot of October 3, 1929. Father Patrick F. O Neill, former Benedictine teacher at Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City Colorado, receives the Carnegie hero award. He was born in Manchester Ohio forty five years ago and lived in Batavia with Wendell Kline. He is currently at Saint Bernard Abbey Alabama.
Miss Dorothy Dunn former music instructor on the Amelia Bethel Felicity circuit has been appointed as voice instructor at Dennison University Baptist Institution Granville Ohio To prepare she travels to Salzburg Austria for two months study with famed voice teacher Louis Graveure She will sail from New York June 22 aboard the Hamburg American liner Hamburg.
County Superintendent E. H. Pattison was summoned to Columbus last Thursday for a conference of county superintendents convened by Dr. B. O. Skinner. The agenda covered curriculum development and methods to improve supervision.
The Nifty Clothing Club of New Tonsville held its fourth meeting at Mrs. Bruce Troute’s home on Tuesday morning June 7. Betty Ansteadt presided and a song-quiz roll call followed with eighteen songs shared. A picnic preceded plans for a lawn fete on Wednesday June 15 at 8 pm in the M E church yard of Newtonsville to benefit the club.
Three resurfacing proposals for southern Ohio roads by the state highway department will be awarded Friday June 24. Milford-Vera Cruz road on Route 494 covers sixteen miles, Route 42 in Clermont county covers five miles, and Route 62 in Hamilton county is also listed. Specifications are on file at the department.
A three week program for the community starts at Milford Methodist Church with twenty teachers. Children will learn Bible stories character building and various handwork. The activity is free and open to all children.
Mrs Lydia Simon formerly of Tate township has lived in Phoenix five years. She underwent a delicate eye operation by a New York specialist and, at age 42, has proven successful after five years of total blindness.
Bethel Grange No 1492 finished a two month contest for new members with 32 petitions and several reinstatements. The group conferred the first two degrees on a class of 19 at the June 7 meeting and will confer the third and fourth degrees on June 21. Visitors welcome.
The Washington celebration sponsored by the Poet's Union of Brown and Clermont counties met Saturday in the M. K. Church in Batavia. Judge Frank E. Davis spoke, introduced by General Penn, with a well attended meeting and a good program.
Enforce traffic laws to improve safety. Do not cut in on others while passing, do not pass on curves or hills, ensure brakes work, and heed horn signals and hand signals. These practices are important for safe driving.
Miss Golda K Jones hosted a lawn party and shower at Maple Grove on June 8 honoring Mr and Mrs William Jones Jr of Marathon. Guests enjoyed games and refreshments for over 100, then watched gifts unopened. The host and family expressed thanks for the friendship and gifts.
Mr. Knox of the State Board of Health accepted the Bethel water works site last Monday. The site is 400 feet west from the branch on the Allan Harris farm in West Bethel. One well already dug yields several hundred gallons per minute and more wells will be sunk as needed.
E C Kennedy, once miller for Hugo Brothers at the Batavia mill, now operates the old Taylor mill at King’s Creek in Champaign county, eighteen miles north of Springfield. The water powered mill grinds flour, feed and cereal for locals. Kennedy previously worked in Springfield’s house painting trade before resuming milling.
The Parent Teachers Association announces a zoo outing for students. Buses depart Tuesday June 21 at 8 a.m. from regular stops. Bring lunch. Accompanying adults pay local per person.
Ted Graham the Ohio state champion faces Buck Everett Indiana State champion in a Milford American Legion arena show on June 20. Four additional bouts of interest are scheduled on the program.
Harold Nichols and Dr H M Wymer will represent Clermont County in the district American Legion outing at Coney Island on Saturday June 16 The district spans Clermont Brown Butler and Hamilton counties.
Moonshine related tragedy follows a community revue staged at Batavia town hall under Dale Tilton and Owen Phillips. The show profits aid town hall rehabilitation, while Edith Studer’s death from moonshine prompts a homicide inquiry into Walter Penny, with coroner attributing the cause to moonshine.
Mrs. Alice Beckman of Mulberry was re-employed for one year by the Clermont County Board of Health as public health nurse. She has served Clermont county in this role for several years and the board received many letters urging her retention.
Joseph Emery and Kenneth Carter of Batavia township confessed to stealing chickens in Clermont county. They named Gus Collier of Stonelick and Charlie Gomien on the Milford and Owensville road as sites. Emery and Carter appeared before Mayor Halbisch and received 30 days in county jail on one charge, with another charge bound over to the grand jury.
Five mile stretch of A. and P. Highway from Higginsport to Clermont County line will be rebuilt this summer. A new bridge will be constructed across the stream just west of the Thomas Green house in Clermont County.
Miss Frances Floyd of Bethel captured first prize in the Union Stock Yards Cincinnati letter writing contest. The competition closed May 1.
The Amelia High School Band will give their first open air concert on Tuesday June 21 on the Amelia school grounds at 8 00 p m. Come everybody and enjoy an evening of good music.
The Beech Forest Chapter D A R held a Flag Day program at Mrs Charles C Kearns home in Amelia on Tuesday afternoon 2 to 4 o clock. A tree was dedicated on the high school grounds in memory of George Washington and refreshments with red white and blue decor were served. Mrs Kearns was assisted by Miss Bettie Belle Mott, a descendant of George Washington.
Members of the Theta Mother's Club gathered in the Nichols garden in Batavia last Wednesday noon. Mrs. Allen B. Nichols hosted the event. Miss Jeanette Nichols, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nichols and a Law College student at the University of Cincinnati, serves as club president.
Harold R. Seyler of Batavia will graduate in the 85th annual commencement at Ohio State University on June 18. He completes a commerce and administration course as part of a class of 1500 students.
Goodwin of Bethel takes over the Courier during Rish’s vacation down East. The former Peebles Press editor will run the paper in Rish’s absence.
State Game Warden Frank Stagg placed a new supply of channel catfish in Hast Fork. The stream is closed and posted for a quarter mile on each side of the YPunnel Mil bridge at Twin Bridges.
The village of Felicity has purchased a first class fire engine for its central located fire department. The new pump offers real protection and service to the village marking Felicity’s initial step into modern firefighting equipment.
John Martin a well known Republican leader and state central committeeman from the Sixth District will attend the Republican National convention opening in Chicago with headquarters at the Stevens hotel.
The Main Street pool and lunch room recently purchased by C. Q. Rice is undergoing interior decoration to improve the general appearance. It offers soft drinks, lunch, candies, cigars, tobacco, and pool. The facility is modern and provides courteous service.
Dr 8 W Scarce formerly of Cincinnati has relocated to Amelia near the C G P Station. Office hours are 11 to 12 a m 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p m with Batavia 2498 for appointments or calls. He will also see patients at his office by appointment.
Lee Feinstein a Milford druggist was fined $50 and costs for illegal fishing last Tuesday. State Game Warden Stagg and Milford Marshal Pierson assisted in the arrest. W. D. Saunders, justice of the peace, heard the case.
