The eastbound night express derailed after shots were fired at conductor A H Wilson and five men were seen fleeing into the brush. Engineer Frank Caton died hours later, with fireman Samuel Richardson and Dr E L Atkinson among the injured. Dunn, the Chief Engineer, and others suspect a planned robbery.
James Overmyer, a young Westbound passenger, was crushed when boarding a moving freight train. A wheel severed his neck and lower face, destroying his head and maiming an arm and leg. He lived on R. Calef's stock farm west of the depot. Relatives were telegraphed and an inquest held.
