A natural gas jet opened on Monday at W. C. Weston’s farm near Olive Branch lights the region. Danby sunk to 204 feet before gas erupted through a inch and a half pipe, producing a seven foot flame and bright illumination. Farmers expect deeper flow as the “gas fever” spreads.
Mrs. Susan Porter Lockwood died Saturday at noon after a long illness of consumption. Born in Nicholsville in 1855, she married E. A. Lockwood in 1879 and had three sons. Funeral services were held Monday at her sister’s home with Rev. Dodson officiating and many local citizens attending.
Don Carlos Buell praised an office crew for extracting a dangerous ammunition train at Shiloh in 1862. The officer named by Buell was Z R Sanders of Miami township later living in Marion Indiana. Sanders received an autograph letter from Buell confirming the deed and praising his bravery.
Bertha Perkins eldest daughter of William Perkins a prominent township farmer and Ohio war veteran married Tuesday the 4th to Harry B Brown of Norwood in a ceremony by Rev Markham of Norwood. Bride wore a charming gown and carried a bouquet of pride rosea. They left for Everton, home of the groom's parents, for a reception and will reside in Norwood. Hood's Sarsaparilla ad closes the notice.
A Batavia procession of Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows, with visiting brethren from Amelia, decorates graves at Union cemetery. Four Knights lie buried there, service led by Past Chancellor Hugh Nichols, band plays a dirge. Berner paroled after manslaughter in Cincinnati riot history.
A brace of mad dogs were killed in Westwood last week. Mary Lane, a local teacher, reported one of her pupils bitten on the cheek on the way home. The child was taken to Cleves for treatment with mad stone, which adhered until venom filled the wound. Officials warn owners to keep dogs restrained and strangers to beware.
Lawson Hayden of Felicity returned home a free man after a Batavia jury found the defendant not guilty in a State liquor case. Prosecutor Griffith called witnesses alleging illegal sale to a habitual drinker, but defense by E Q Crane convinced the jury.
A parrot owned by Miles Bicking plucked out its own feathers in a fit of despair last week. Bicking, puzzled, sat and wondered what provoked the act, speculating it may have overheard remarks about the Ohio platform. The bird, once pretty, now resembles its less glamorous past.
Vandals on the New Richmond turnpike scattered tacks along a road used by bicyclists. Tires were punctured and riders including many women were distressed. The piece calls the act meaner than dog poisoning and tree killing and urges a penitentiary term for the perpetrator.
Al. Kelly, 45, hanged himself in a Wilmington jail last Thursday after facing a judgment dodge charge. He swallowed a dose of strychnine dissolved in water, bid farewell to fellow prisoners, and died within minutes, ending the judgment in a fatal act.
John Robinson, circus proprietor at Terrace Park, narrowly escaped injury when his elephant named Cincy refused a platform car and lashed out during a lightning storm. A blinding flash diverted the beast and Robinson fell away, avoiding serious harm. After the tempest, the elephant was captured and shipped to New York. Robinson is out of the hospital.
The Bathavia city hall and grounds are criticized for weed choked facades and neglected landscaping. While interior spaces are cared for, exterior upkeep lags, with dead maples and a weed filled park. Local readers urged more energy to transform the area into a pleasant civic space.
A Clermont County document lists 1 153 soldiers left in the county from a 7 000 man total in service 1861 1865. William Meek of Owensville and Fox and Fisher of Fayetteville were tried before Judge Davis. Meek admitted burglarizing Roudebush smoke house and stealing meat, blaming Fox and Fisher. The admission caused courtroom turmoil, with defense attorneys arguing. Meek was remanded to jail as the jury began deliberations.
A Boston minister claimed jail costs exceed all schools and churches combined. On December 20 18M the Amelia railroad station was burgled with $22 in money and clothing taken. David L Judd of Amelia was tried last Saturday. the jury found him guilty and a motion for a new trial to be heard Monday. The report also notes the first summer fruits, especially strawberries, grown by W F Crane near town.
