Clermont County Women’s Clubs mark golden anniversary event

The Clermont County Federation of Women’s Clubs celebrated its 50th anniversary on June 1 at Batavia Methodist Church. Members from nine clubs listened to Mrs Mae Rosselot speak on People and honored charter members with corsages. A Pageant of Prominent Women portrayed figures like Victoria and Jane Addams. Newly elected officers include Mrs Forrest Ely as president and Mrs Frank Malick as first vice president.

Local figures honored for service and art in Clermont County

Roy Battles of Batavia, VOA radio director, named Honorary Outstanding State Farmer by the Future Farmers of America in Columbus. Alberta Flottman of New Richmond wins a $180 Morris M White scholarship for commercial art at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Sheridan King of Amelia to receive a BS in chemical engineering from Lafayette College Eaton Pa. Marian Graber of Amelia earns four year scholarship to Our Lady of Cincinnati College. The Courier releases new poetry books by Edna Hamilton and Sheila Stinson Wagner with a May 14 poetry booklet Heart Songs. Harley Hamilton, former Batavia school superintendent, now Cincinnati attorney, appears in notes on local educators.

Fire Department Secures Insurance Rate Reduction at Felicity Event

About 350 officers members and guests attended the Fourth District Convention at Felicity VFW Post. Cpl. Herman Houghton VFW Post sponsored the event. Felicity VFW firing squad won a loving cup for drill excellence against squads from eight counties. New Fourth District officers include Clifford Phillips and Everett Rigdon with Auxiliary officers shown in a group photo.

Council Opens Bid on Electric Contract and Fire Insurance Cut

After a Tuesday meeting, Forest Ely was authorized to condemn Cincinn ati Gas & Electric lines if needed as the village negotiates a franchise renewal due June 30. Williamsville Fire Dept wins insurance rate cuts for Union and Pierce townships within three miles of the fire station after equipment upgrades. Chief Clifford Schaerges notes two pumpers and two boosters, 800 gallons of water per truck, with readiness in 30 seconds. 2,000 more feet of hose to be purchased. 20 unpaid members support local protection.

Moscow School Head Asked To Resign

A meeting is set to consider ouster charges against R. W. Spence superintendent of Moscow schools. Board president Chris Maus says Spence faces charges of not cooperating with teachers, neglect of duties, and working part time at the Cincinnati post office. A hearing date will be set and Spence will have a chance to defend himself.

Baseball Champs To Be Honored At Victory Banquet

The Amelia Lions Club sponsors a victory banquet for the Amea Class B state championship baseball team at the D X Ranch tonight. Sixty more reservations will be accepted from parents and fans. Two guest speakers include Flea Clifton formerly with the Detroit Tigers and now in Cincinnati Reds system, plus a Cincinnati sports writer. A magician will entertain for twenty minutes.

Withamsville Wife Seeks Search for Missing Husband

Mrs. Roger R. Wersel of Withamsville asked Clermont County Sheriff Clyde Dericks yesterday to search for her husband Clyde Dericks 53 owner of Withamsville Supply Company who failed to return from a business trip to Cincinnati Tuesday. She said he suffered a head injury two years ago in a hold up at his business.

Albino Sparrow Poisoned by Its Mother

A family reports the death of a sparrow raised at Clough Road by Mr and Mrs George Weber. They accuse the parent of murder after the albino bird died within an hour of the mother feeding it and flying away. A bird expert calls the idea superstition and notes albino sparrows are rare.
