The Convention of Superintendents of the Railway Mail Service in Washington revised rules to speed mail with car delivery in major cities when feasible. It urged railways to equip postal cars with fire extinguishers and noted other federal personnel changes and overseas treaty ratifications.
In the Cherokee nation a protest is drafted by over 1,000 African Americans contending they should share government land payments previously limited to Cherokee blood. The document targets the Cherokee Council and will be sent to the Interior Secretary. In a separate note Irish residents of Galveston pledge 750 dollars for widows and children of Dublin Phenix Park murder victims.
On the 28th a fire caused substantial losses including John Corbett's carpet store in Charleston D C valued at 27500, twelve buildings in Raleigh North Carolina at 10000, sixteen Webb City Missouri houses at 12000, Johnson & Danley's Indianapolis at 3400, William Reed of Vevay Indiana struck by lightning with 2000 loss, Modern Flouring Mills New Philadelphia Ohio 15000, residence of William Milligan Keene Ohio 2000, residence of David Hunter Washington Kentucky 3000, C C Hortich cotton warehouse New York 60000, John Johnson sawmill Montgomery Alabama with no stated loss, Thomas Allen barn Dayton Ohio 1200.
Mrs Fanny Kellogg Bachert wife of Max Bachert sues Albert Pulitzer and the New York Morning Journal Association for 50000 in damages over alleged libelous statements in the Morning Journal of May to 3.
Nelson Jordan a Negro, drunken and riotous, resisted arrest at Archer Alachua County Florida and shot the Marshal in the bowels. Other Negroes joined him as the Mayor summoned a posse which was fired upon. The posse returned fire wounding Jordan. Duncan a colored politician formerly in the United States Land Office was arrested among others.
A sequence of violent incidents includes a Missouri suitor ambushing and killing a rival and mortally wounding his partner before taking his own life, a German woman found dead by gas in New York, a Grand Forks gambler shot by a rival, and a Tipton printer killed in a quarrel. Additional reports note fatal encounters in Killen Texas and on the Texas & Pacific line, plus a Chicago firm charged over child labor violations.
James P. Irving, ex Assemblyman and proprietor of the Empire saloon, was sentenced to two years in prison and fined $250 for criminal assault on Dick Darling. A second offense leads to a $20 fine and costs. At the Convention of the Pennsylvania Home Protection Party in Pittsburg on the 30th Ira E. Howard of Franklin was nominated for State Treasurer and John R. Fordham of Scranton for Auditor General. The convention adopted the platform from the National Prohibition Home Protection Party.
John Anderson a one year convict from Chicago died in his Joliet Illinois cell after terror cries and a knife wound to the throat. Guard reached his cell to find him clutching bars in agony. Cellmate Michael Mooney is suspected of murder but Mooney claims Anderson slashed his own throat.
A boiler explosion at Blackburn & Snyder's sawmill near Bayou Chiest in St. Landry Parish LA killed two workers and fatally injured eight others. The blast wrecked the mill and hurled the boiler about two hundred yards, leaving a scene of devastation.
Reports from Petersburg describe widespread crop damage in Virginia due to extended drought. Cotton is coming up poorly, tobacco plants are small or drying up, and even a full tobacco crop would be late. Many peanut seeds rotted, forcing replanting by farmers.
An unknown burglar was killed by the Fremont Sheriff while resisting arrest a few days ago. His partner was arrested but refuses to disclose identity. E. N.
