American Oil Well Near Burkeville Kentucky A Blooming Fire
About ten years ago while boring for salt water near Burkeville Kentucky a fountain of oil was struck 200 feet through solid rock rising 12 feet above the surface and flowing at 75 gallons a minute. The oil migrated into a nearby creek and burned along the hillside while the flames scorched the trees. The substance, green turning brown in air, is highly volatile and pungent with a strong gas content. It has yielded two flows in six years, the last on July 4 1835 producing about twenty barrels. Called American Oil it is valued in Kentucky and Ohio and may be a petroleum or mineral oil from coal formations with carburetted hydrogen gas.
