The Junior Epworth League of the M. E. Sunday school held its annual hayride yesterday. About two wagons loaded with hay transported the children from the church at 2 p m to a creek road outing. They returned to the infirmary lawn for lunch provided by Rev. Burdsall and lemonade by Henry Reynolds who also furnished conveyances. Mr Applegate supplied a team and wagon.
Augustus C. Johnson, manager in the First Third National Bank Cincinnati collection department, is missing after acknowledging a shortage of 21600 dollars. He held funds since May in varying amounts and fled with his family, with detectives now on the lookout. Several Batavians were implicated in related note dealings due this August.

The Barracas, a team largely from Amelia, visited Williamsburg last Saturday July 27 and were defeated as Williamsburg pitcher McAfee faltered in the eighth and ninth innings. Williamsburg won with 19 hits and 2 errors to Barracas 2 hits and 9 errors. batteries were McAfee and Frazier for Williamsburg and Rhofine and Madden for Barracas. Next game set for August 3 at Goshen.
In Nicholas county Kentucky Ed Buntin farms potato patches where some vines bear both potatoes and small tomatoes. Local reports note similar freaks of nature with unusual fruit on June apple trees in Adams county and two headed kittens in nearby areas.
Captain E. K. Parrot and company K returned Sunday from an eight day camp at Ft Ancient. The unit performed well on hikes and drills. Private Sprague won first prize and Sanders second in the competitive drill. The Chloroform Quartet entertained Friday evening for officers and visitors. The trip was pleasant and profitable, with Parrott popular among privates and officers.
A state report shows Greene county collected $282.24 from violators in six months, the highest total in the state. Prosecutor Frank Johnson credited Greene with $282.24 of $847.41 treasury receipts, ahead of Ashland and neighboring counties, with other sums listed for Holmes, Searress, and Wood among violators.
Two boys from each county will have their expenses paid to the State Fair to be held August 26. Applicants must be 15 to 20 years old. Those who attended last year as guests of the board are ineligible. Selection will be on Saturday August 17 at 10 a m at the county courthouse in each county.
Last Monday Sheriff Taal arrested Lee Charlton near Midland on a non-support complaint filed by his wife who lives near Marathon. Charlton is jailed pending further action.

He earned the honor for original research on First Year Science in High Schools his findings published as a book. John Thalman spoke in the Mathematics Section on Industrial Mathematics in Vocational Schools.

A large elm on Spring and Market streets at the Dewdney property corner was felled last week after dying from borers over three years. About twelve cords of its wood were cut for furnace fuel by Tom Glancy this winter. The tree, over 75 years old, shaded travelers and children who rested beneath its branches.
The Buford band secured the contract to furnish music for the Boston fair on Wednesday and Thursday, while the Hillsboro ladies band was engaged for Friday. The Batavia band bid $4 more than the winner as the contract choice.
