A delightful evening welcomed visitors to Judge Hulick's grounds for a Presbyterian society lawn fete. The mansion opened to the public with decorated rooms and bright lighting. The lawn featured snowy tables and guests enjoyed refreshments as an orchestra played on the porch. The Judge and his wife hosted with grace, creating a memorable, elegant neighborhood event.
Wm F Pond a 36 year old Mt Varme grocer was seriously injured when his delivery wagon bolted after a bicycle frightened the team. He was trapped under groceries, awoke in unconscious state with a deep scalp wound needing six stitches and a bruised base of the brain area. Pond rested easy Thursday after doctors treated him and removed him to his home.
News from Batavia reports the death of Remington Lane in San Francisco on July 7, 1902. Born in 1870, Lane studied art in Europe and New York, achieving fame as a skilled engraver and designer. He leaves a widow and two children, with burial planned in California and remains potentially brought home later.
John Fay a Batavia resident since boyhood and former steamboatman died in the tefiimary on Sunday at age 71 from bulious fever and heart trouble. Born in Batavia he lived here most of his life with his mother on Wood Street. He was a scholar and keen reader, remembered for a remarkable memory, and known for kindness despite eccentric habits. He was buried yesterday on the institution grounds with few friends present.
Mathew Williams aged about 65 and formerly of this place dropped dead on a street near his Oakley home. The cause of death was heart trouble and he was held in esteem during his residence here.
The Batavia Blues, formed for service with the State guard at Newark, departed Sunday for the scene of action. A lively group of friends and young ladies accompanied them to the train singing an Irish lament. Enlistment lasts five years with annual two week encampments. The Batavia outfit includes Ed. K. Parrott, Paul Dustin, Homer Glancy, Carl Griffith, Lloyd Stump, Simpson Griffith, Lloyd Hulicki, Lawrence Nichols, George Thrall, Isaac Titus.
Seventy-eight pupils received diplomas at Batavia city hall in a ceremony marking the first common school graduation under the Patterson law. Principal C. T. Wilkinson of Cincinnati spoke on the aims of modern education and character formation. Vocal solos by C. DeBruin and readings by Miss Lou Orebaugh delighted the audience as 78 graduates were called to the stage for diplomas. Rev. Frank assisted with religious duties as the local orchestra provided music.
