A large crowd watched Mt Washington defeat Batavia 18 to 3 at Batavia ball park. Key hits included Griffith and Hesse with multiple extras, while Simonton and Titus led pitching. Two more games are scheduled for July 4.
The remaining officers elected last November will take office on specified dates. Clerk takes seat on the first Monday in August, Recorder and treasurer on the first Monday in September, Auditor on the 8th Monday in October, and County commissioners and surveyor on the 8th Monday in September.
Sheriff Bert F. Swing helped a 15 year old runaway from West Virginia who wandered two weeks seeking the world. The lad, barefoot and hungry, asked to be cared for and his parents wired to with a transportation check. He cried with joy upon learning he would return home and departed on the next train.
The O. E. Stars of the 22nd district met in Moscow on June 26 with near full county and district representation. EH Pattison welcomed attendees, Mrs. Johanna Hail gave the response, and Eli Speidel delivered the principal afternoon address. A banquet, music, recitations, and a Marguerite Chapter flag drill closed the day. next year’s gathering is set for Ripley.
Time for entries closed July 1 for Clermont county corn contest. Funds remain $15 to send the county winner to Washington, with Monroe township funding one trip via Supt. Pattison of Moscow. Contestants hail from Batavia Williamsburg Monroe Pierce and other townships, with Granges and the University contributing to the fund.
Jacob Cox, a 65 year old deaf blind and formerly seeing man from Mt Piegah, was brought by Sheriff Swing and two assistants to Batavia en route to Columbus for an eye operation after cataracts rendered him helpless. His strength made conveyance difficult.
Miss Mabel Peterson bride of Homer Patten after a June 27 Williamsburg wedding was honored with a miscellaneous shower June 120 hosted by Mrs. Earl Davis and Miss Mabel Long. Guests admired blue bird decor, hunted for a hidden parcel, and left recipes as keepsakes before a luncheon, with gifts from over 40 friends.
The Bethel and Georgetown shoe plants announce a Saturday July 7 wage raise. P. A. Pathe leads both factories and pushed the unsolicited raise, recognizing the high cost of living and workers' value. The plants operate five days a week while others in the state cut hours.
The Columbus meeting of the Odd Fellows Grand Lodge drew large attendance with all districts represented. The Grand Sire’s memorial hall address was a masterpiece of oratory and memorable to attendees. Portsmouth was chosen as the site for the 1918 gathering.
Alvin Hodges of Princeton University and son of H A Hodges of Milford wed Miss Marguerite Foster of Avondale Cincinnati. The bride is daughter of Albert Foster, Cincinnati real estate broker. The groom is an attorney in Cleveland.
During Sunday night storm lightning struck the Georgetown residence of Walter Beck conductor for the O G P and burned it to the ground. The home was partly insured and suffered heavy damage.
Bert and Ernst Romoher of Edenton, drunk on a Milford traction car to Newtonsville, attacked conductor Ed Brunk and fought with the motorman. Deputies arrested them in Batavia. Chas Charleton aided transport. A near-accident occurred when a rider blocked the break. The pair, new Army enlistees, face hearing Tuesday.
A Bethel Red Cross gathering Sunday afternoon drew a large, enthusiastic crowd as officials predicted enrollment exceeding 500. Mayor Chas Brannock opened the event with Judge Hugh L. Nichols, Judge W A Joseph, Judge Clarence N Young, Allen N Nichols, Belgian speaker Mr Joyce, and musicians from Batavia provided entertainment. The Bethel chapter reports 316 members, with praise for the Batavia band and local performers including Mrs Carey Scott and Mrs Anderson who read an original Red Cross poem.
The Williamsburg Chautauqua opens today for a five day session with a highly reputed program. Ticket sales are expected to surpass last year as preparations focus on every department and good weather is hoped for. The junior department is complete and ready for attendees.
Batavia plans two daytime baseball games on Independence Day with Covington Clover Leaf as the visiting club. First pitch at 10 o clock, second at 2 30 o clock, inviting local fans to support the home team and enjoy a quiet holiday atmosphere.
County Normal School at Batavia begins in September 1917 with free tuition for all high school graduates. A trained teacher and director along with the county superintendent will staff it. The one year normal training is intended to meet 1921 requirements and aid teachers unable to leave home.
The American Red Cross expanding nationwide with large county drive targets. Clermont Chapter mobilizes Bethel Felicity and Franklin townships to build a 4000 member base. Batavia members meet weekly to make hospital shirts and train new branches while Clermont Sun provides 2000 membership cards and stationery.
Elk Lick farmer Milt Treton raises hogs and plans to market a large litter in fall. A pig born with two bodies joined at the neck, eight legs and two tails was found lifeless and preserved for display at Whit Hartwell’s curiosities collection. Showmen have offered for the specimen, but Treton will not sell it yet.
Ohio recorded 1 105 649 births in the past year with more boys than girls. Some physicians avoid reporting births but must report deaths for burial certificates. The total exceeds prior years.
County Agricultural Agent advises controlling plant lice on potatoes tomatoes and other garden crops in Clermont county with nicotine sulphate sprays or Black Leaf 40. A home decoction made from tobacco stems boiled in water mixed with soap suffs. Apply with knapsack sprayer to insects on the leaf undersides.
Commentary argues city youths who left jobs for farming will struggle to justify draft exemptions. It asserts the farm operated before the color call and will do so again, deeming excuses to remain on the farm unlikely to succeed in draft cases.
Nellie Virginia Fleming, 22, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Fleming of Cincinnati, arrived in Milford June 26 and checked into the National Hotel. Found dead next morning from chloroform poisoning, inquest returned verdict of self-inflicted death. She was a bookkeeper with solid reputation. funeral held in Cincinnati. Suspected motive linked to a troubled love affair.
The Clermont county Local Drafting Board reorganized after orders from Washington with Dr. Needham as executive officer Dr. Fomor as surgeon and C J Williams as clerk. They renumbered county registration cards to 1 2000 and will notify men of new numbers from Washington.
Announcement of a June wedding between Miss Helen Maxwell of Monterey a popular Clermont teacher and Oliver T Lewis of the U S Navy stationed at Paris Island South Carolina. They will reside at Port Royal.
