Batavia Begins Municipal Electricity Survey

Batavia starts an official survey to measure public and residential electricity use as it weighs a municipal lighting plant. Wilson Kohli of Childers and Kohli with W. W. Newman conduct a month long study, while earlier Cincinnati Gas and Electric held a 10 year contract now expired.

Bing Crosby Returns to Kraft Music Hall Program

Bing Crosby is back on Kraft Music Hall after a patch with Kraft Foods. The program resumes February 7 with Frank Morgan and Eddie Duchin joining Crosby on the national network. Crosby will also work on a new motion picture soon and may be away from broadcasts periodically.

Five Louisiana bloodhounds arrive for Mr Britton

William Britton of Williamsburg received six bloodhounds from Louisiana including one savage female hound and five males. Britton believes the pack will help trace even the National treasury deficit after training.

Simple Loveland Wedding Unites Carrie Moore and Charles Wolf

Miss Carrie May Moore daughter of Mr and Mrs Glenn E Moore of Loveland married Charles E Wolf son of Mr and Mrs Edward Wolf of Batavia in a Loveland Presbyterian ceremony. The double ring service featured white gladiolas candles and ferns with music by Miss Cones and Miss Messinger. The couple’s reception followed at the bride’s home and they plan a home in Cincinnati on California avenue Bond Hill after a brief trip.

Court S. Crane Dies at Point Isabel

Court S. Crane, a bachelor and longtime resident of Cler mont County, died at his Bethel Point Isabel home on Monday. Neighbors found him, and funeral arrangements had not been made. He had worked as a gardener, trucker, and retired farmer, and was formerly with the Dillman Flour Mills in Bethel.

The Social Security Board reports 381 people in Clermont County receive Old-Age and Survivors Insurance totaling 7094.68 monthly and 85136.16 yearly. Across Hamilton Highland Clermont and Brown Counties 10634 people receive 213306.37 monthly and 2560396.44 yearly. Lump sum payments to 226 individuals amount to 51210.83 over three months ending December 31, 1945.

1946 Farm Program For Clermont County

Byron Ross, Clermont County A A A Chairman, says committee men will start contacting neighboring farmers about February 1, 1946 to outline the new program. Farmers gain more authority in selecting conservation practices with A A A assistance, and should plan their 1946 operations beforehand. The effort aims to replenish soil fertility and repair damage from heavy wartime production, starting a long term conservation and improvement push.

Batavia Fire Department Extinguishes Two Fires

Batavia firefighters answered two calls in the past week. A basement blaze at Blochers Pharmacy started by a defective motor was extinguished Saturday night. Monday night a chimney wall fire at Eldon Studert’s Wood Street home caused wall and roof damage with losses in the several hundred dollar range.

Mayor Munden announced a greater than expected need for clothing for United Nations Rural Rehabilitation in devastated countries. Collection extended one week with packing at Town Hall and Post Office box drop offs. February 2 is the deadline for donations.

Tobacco Auction To End Late February At Ripley Market

The Ripley tobacco market is expected to end sales late in February with totals around 7 to 9 million pounds sold by then. As of Monday 6,305,436 pounds fetched 2,531,025.32 dollars, an average of 36.88, with prices ranging from 9 to 60 per hundred and few rejections. Deliveries remain heavy this week but are seen easing soon.

Report 1945 Soil Building Practices Due by Feb 15

February 15, 1946 is the final date for all farm operators or owners who signed a 1945 farm report indicating intent to participate in the 1945 Agricultural Conservation Program to report soils practices performed last year. If they received conservation materials from the AAA Office they may qualify for payment after performing an additional practice such as mowing pasture plowing rye fertilizer on the 1945 harvested wheat crop or reseeding depleted pastures designated as non crop open pasture. Call the County AAA Office to report 1945 practices before February 15 1946.

Mr and Mrs Charles Houser announce the marriage of their daughter Martha Jean to Mr Charles McKinney of Amelia Kentucky. They were married in Levington Kentucky last week and will reside there temporarily. Mr McKinney recently was discharged from the Army after forty six months of service. Grace Rondebush and Virginia Milla visited their mother in Athens Ohio over the weekend.

Ohio pastors call for elimination of compulsory peacetime military training

In Columbus 2300 Ohio ministers at the convention urged treaties with Great Britain Russia China and France to end compulsory service in peace and push gradual disarmament. They also pressed international control of the atomic bomb. Dr William S. Shimer warned a third world war is likely within 20 years. Officers including Louis J. Taber were reelected. The meeting closes today.

Clermont County Bar Association Holds Meeting With Returning Veterans

The Clermont County Bar Association met January 25 1946 at the Cincinnati Club with numerous members present. Riffle Named Red Cross Chairman in Clermont County

Clermont County Red Cross Board chose Mr. Riffle as Fund Campaign Chairman at the January 28 meeting in Batavia. Campaign goal is 13150 for Clermont County with a national goal of 100 million dollars. The drive begins March 1, with officials noting Red Cross will serve 1.75 million veterans nationwide and continue aiding those at home and overseas.

War Veteran Named Assistant Cashier at Batavia Bank

Robert R. Griffin of Batavia has been appointed assistant cashier of The First National Bank of Batavia. Griffin was discharged from the U S Coast Guard after serving as lieutenant for five and a half years in the Atlantic Coast division.

Clermont Schools Enter State Poetry Contest

Clermont County schools will participate in a state poetry contest begun by the State Department of Counties. Miss Ruth Win Moscow Schools will serve as Clermont Chairman. The contest closes March 1 and has three classifications. The best poem from each class will be printed in an Ohio Poetry anthology. In 1944 Clermont entries received recognition from Jean Callahan and Frank Hoggatt.

War veteran to practice law in Batavia

Major John S. Moore, a fourth generation lawyer and World War II veteran, joins the Batavia firm Ely White and Davidson as an associate upon Ohio Bar admission. A Duke University and Duke Law School graduate, he served with the 10th Infantry at Fort Thomas and the 81st Infantry Division in the Philippines, returning from Japan in December. He will sit for the Ohio Bar in June. he married Betty Wilson of Batavia in 1942.
