Noble Batavia matriarch Matilda Baum dies at home

Mrs. Matilda Baum widow of William Baum Sr died at her Batavia residence last Saturday at 8 p m cause nervous shock after a fall on the bottom step broke her hip. She was a respected church member and beloved neighbor with a large family. Funeral from the home Tuesday at 2 p m with Rev Burdsall.

Batavia Armory Ready for Dedication With Ball

The Batavia armory was completed and cleaned for inspection by the State Armory Board. Architect James visited and approved the work. A dedication date is pending and an honorary membership at 60 cents monthly will grant access to facilities for basketball and dancing. Captain KE Parrott to oversee operations.

Economy claimed by Clermont County probate judge

The Courier questions why the Clermont County probate judge has not ordered a county treasury examination in six months. A November inspection by Baker of Amelia and Kennedy of Felicity yielded a report whose findings have not been made public. The piece cites alleged wasteful supply orders and questions the judge’s commitment to economy as his term nears its February 10 expiration.

Hicks Jones Found Dead After Flood Search

Hicks Jones of New Richmond disappeared during the high water and was found near Twelve Mile Creek two miles west of New Richmond along the C and O railroad. He was taken to the morgue for burial preparation. Jones, about 55, was the father of Howard Jones, recently sentenced to the penitentiary for robbing Dr Kennedy. Campbell county coroner held an inquest.

DIES NEAR BETHEL WITH WIDOWING OF MRS BUSCH

Mrs Matilda widow of William Busch died Sunday at her Bethel home aged 55 after illness lasting some time. Survived by three boys and three girls. Burial Monday at 1 a m at Bethel. Describes her as a good Christian woman and devoted mother. Messrs A J Powell and daughter Mrs Nichols and granddaughter Amelia visited James Wasner and wife on Sunday.

Framing a Farm Purchase Scam in Oxford

A man named W L Marrical in Oxford paid 1700 for the Erastus Houlick farm above Batavia to a stranger calling himself C W Perry who never owned the property. Perry vanished after the deed and mortgage were sent to Batavia for recording, leaving Marrical to face a lost sum and urging buyers to use attorneys to verify titles.

Surprise church social ends with reciprocal student gathering

Members of Teal and Ely Sunday-school classes staged a joint surprise on January 24 at Teal's home after a church service. The men cooked a feast, women hosted, and both groups exchanged stories of the prank, ending the evening with songs and friendly goodbyes.

Fourfold Hearts Found in Easton Family Doctor News

A Easton Pennsylvania doctor reports that a single family includes four members with two hearts each. The mother two daughters and one son possess eight hearts in total and remain healthy. The physician notes they should be long lived, as a spare heart is available if one fails.

Parcel post novelty sends baby to grandmother

Last Friday in Batavia Jesse Beagle and wife sent their baby by parcel post with W C Lytle to its grandmother a mile away. The baby weighed 104½ pounds with a $60 valuation and rested in a flannel wrapped box. The journey cost 16 cents.

County authorities target storekeepers in Milford and surrounding areas selling cigarettes or tobacco to minors. Violators face heavy fines and possible loss of licenses. Paper and paper products given free with tobacco purchases are cited as drawing trade. A warning to violators to cease and curb the practice.
