A Monday morning fire at Batavia's schoolhouse was contained within 30 minutes thanks to rapid response by Elmer Ducknall and a portable engine. The blaze, caused by wind-displaced heating pipes, caused minimal damage estimated at under 20000 dollars, covered by insurance.
At the school-house fire Monday morning a small colored boy laments losing his books while another boy jokes about no more school. A white classmate allegedly defaces the department record on the blackboard as the building seems saved.
John W. Robinson known as King John turned 70 last Saturday. His children and relatives gathered for a surprise dinner at James Robinsons home. He is a member of the Sith and generally in good health aside from disabilities from army life.
Saturday morning the barn of Robert Kyle, wealthy Mt. Carmel farmer, caught fire. Neighbors saved nine horses and farming equipment. two horses, one cow, and much feed were destroyed. Loss about 1500 dollars with 800 dollars insured. Cause unknown.

The Ohio Legislature repealed the rabbit protection statute allowing rabbits to be shot on sight at any hour any day except Sunday. Mr. Decker introduced the bill and the body passed it, deeming the change wise and good.
An itinerant fakir tours Cler mont County selling books that claim to contain teachers' question lists with answers for the conun drums. Examiners deny possessing such copies and make their own lists. The visitor did not meet six Clermont teachers during the stop.
Low Buerkle and Pete Ballinger led eleven hounds in a fox-hunt meeting near Sugar Camp Monday morning. Additional hounds joined at Perin town. Buerkle’s pack is handsome but pampered, yet they performed well. Three foxes were started but none captured. the outing was considered pleasant.
A Clermanter Inventor W B Ross president of Batavia school and Baptist minister seeks a law to replace Australian ballots with a voting box. The device uses a platinum row card and key like rows to lock others after a vote, with party representatives guarding access and preventing multiple votes or overvotes.

James Stowe, a wealthy farmer of Eli Lick, reported a barn and contents burned last week. He estimated the loss at about $3,000 with only partial insurance and the fire origin undetermined.
A Randolph Randall dog attacked people and other dogs in Goshen, then was killed along with bitten dogs. A sow in Randall’s herd acted violently, foamed at the mouth, and was killed with her piglets afterward. Warnings issued to burn the pen safely to prevent infection. Mrs. Randall traveled to Indiana seeking treatment but the madstone failed to adhere.
The mayor's Dennison building office was shot at last week as two bullets struck the wall near his desk. Detectives noted the violence likely came from street roisters, though he remained unharmed. The incident left the mayor chilly but unharmed and prompted a police inquiry.
The amended law sets the squirrel season to start on July 4 and continue for sport hunting through December 15.
George Douthwait, a New Richmond hack driver, was badly injured last Saturday afternoon when the horse kicked him as he reached over the dash to whip it during a rain. Enos Reed aided him, a physician was called, and the mail was sent to Cincinnati. He will recover with facial scars.
A January dispatch from Portsmouth reports a weekend storm causing widespread damage. Three houseboats sank, buildings unroofed, fences ruined, and roads and bridges washed out by rapidly rising streams. The Cincinnati Portsmouth and Virginia train was stopped by a washout and reached Portsmouth late Sunday. High waves damaged embankments north of the city while Scioto river bottoms overflowed four miles wide to depths of ten to twenty feet.
The Mulberry Farmer Institute met last week in a noted historic venue with a large membership. Speakers covered Fences dining and farming topics including Daniel Webster on a Farmer and Commercial Fertilizers. Musical numbers enlivened the program amid varied papers and addresses by local and state figures.
Charles Augustus Moore a well known Clermont and Williamsburg resident died suddenly last Saturday after rising from a hearty meal. He had visited Batavia recently and seemed bright before falling asleep at home in Williamsburg. He leaves a widow a large family and many friends with burial by the G A R post in Batavia Cemetery accompanying by Batavia post.
George T Saltiied died at his Augusta Kentucky home last Sunday night of paralysis. He was a leading Cincinnati broker until two years ago, last with BF A Bradley. He once ran the Taylor House and was once wealthy, from the old respected family near Bethel.
Mrs. John Thompson of Williamsburg collapsed from a sudden pain while en route to church last Friday night. She died in Parker Walker’s home before medical help arrived. She leaves a husband two daughters and several grandchildren. She was aged 62 and well respected.
Intelligence reports the death of Mary Thompson at Blacktown Iowa on January 17 1898 widow of Thomas Thompson mother of William C Thompson who died at Mission Ridge while serving with the 59th Ohio regiment. Also announced are the deaths of Orville Weaver at Owensville December 22 1807 aged about two years Mary Zink at Hillsboro January 16 widow of Rev M P Zink and born 1834 in Decatur Brown Co. Perry Holland of Williamsburg township died near Concord January 21 aged 76.
Summerside Creamery on the C G P R R is run by a three member board with about thirty shareholders. Each share is worth 50 dollars and 2000 pounds of milk are processed daily. H Frear is the butter maker and a single man runs the machinery. The plant began June 28 and currently meets more demand than it can supply.
The Clermont boy Henry Pohlman Jr. son of John Pohlman, former wagon maker, vanished with eight thousand dollars from the Greenburg Curcjaxe Company where he served as traveling agent. Once a bright precocious schoolboy, he left home around 1874 to work in the city, but fast living ended his promising career.

Persistent rains swelled the Est Fork turning the creek at S.n0 into a river and flooding the Duckwa’s bottoms. Dwellers near the bridge on the West bank evacuated as water crossed the turnpike. Rain ceased by 9:30 am and a heavy wind followed. by morning the water receded and the danger passed.

Judge Lewis Wmory McComas was yesterday chosen United States Senator to succeed Arthur P. Gorman. McComas, a prominent Maryland jurist and former supreme court justice, won with 62 votes to 17 for Gorman and 5 for Shaw.
Summerside farmer Gotleib Alchholtz rode along Eastern avenue when his team bolted into an electric car and fled across the track. The motorman could not stop and a collision ensued, reducing the wagon to wreckage and injuring no one seriously. The motorman received minor cuts and bruises, passengers were shaken, horses captured, and neither horse nor driver was seriously hurt.
