On the fifteenth Mr Pendleton presented a remonstrance from Cincinnati manufacturers of iron roofing against reducing the duty on tin plate. Messrs Shotcorn and Pendleton petitioned for appropriations to fund cannel inspectors to prevent the spread of smallpox. Mr Voorhees-

The House postponed Myers Senate bill on smallpox spread to January 21 while approving amended labor lien and school funding measures. It passed Akron school accommodations bonds and Worthington school board financing. Civil service reform praised. bills on drunkenness penalties and minor loitering failed. Senate adjourns issue and river canal work discussed. Several resolutions, including insurance commission and canal costs, were adopted.
Milwaukee January 16 George Scheller lessee of the Newhall House Bar is arrested on a warrant charging him with setting the fire that destroyed the hotel. He was taken to the county jail after questioning and denied the accusation amid intense public tension and rumors of lynching.
Eye witnesses report a devastating blaze at a wooden circus in Berditcheff Russia during a performance. Fire caused by fireworks trapped hundreds as doors failed to open and many leapt from windows. Officials estimate up to 270 deaths including police and a bourse VP. audience was mostly Jewish.
Wilfred Blunt funded the defense of Arabs at a cost estimated between 10000 and 15000. The English philanthropist supported the defeater rebel cause and backed Y. Feral.

A San Francisco dentist Dr W J Younger reports preserving extracted teeth by grafting them onto a rooster’s comb to keep them alive until use. The method involves placing the tooth on the comb, securing it, and later transplanting it into the cavity after preparation and anesthesia. A test case showed a tooth kept alive ten days on the comb before placement.
A sandstone pillar known as Pompely or Pom pey's Pillar rises on the south bank of the Yellowstone near the river. The inscription reading William Clarke July 25 1806 is carved high on the north face but a vandal has scratched his name over it. General Anderson orders a glass framed cover to protect Clarke's engraving while noting Clarke's adventurous route and later governance roles.
In a Virginia narrative set along the James River, a slave named Sambo endures a deadly trap when a doctor forces him to maul endless rails. After Sambo kills the doctor in self defense, he flees with the corpse, and a lawyer uses the confession to secure Sambo’s conviction and hanging years later.
