Fugitive Edgar Popham Nabbed After Auto Thefts
Edgar Popham of Moscow aged 18 was arrested after escaping from Lancaster Reform School where he served a sentence for horse stealing. He admitted stealing two cars from Harry Dillman Bethel and Francis Shinkle Chile driving them to Cincinnati and Seymour Indiana. He was recaptured near Cincinnati and is to be returned to Lancaster to finish his sentence before facing further prosecution. He is also a navy deserter and may face Federal action for transporting stolen autos across state lines. He altered a license plate and is described as a shrewd, roaming felon.

Lexington Ky January 14 The Burley Tobacco Growers Cooperative Association says it sold about 15 million dollars worth of 1922 and 1928 crop tobacco to several manufacturers at prices set by the board This marks one of the cooperative s largest sales to date and total sales figures were not fully disclosed In addition 99 187 farmers have signed up as members an increase of 964 in the past week with sworn reports showing 16 963 007 pounds of 1928 Burley sold at an average 18 85 per hundred across auctions and re sales

Lexington announces Liggett Myers Tobacco Company purchased about sixty million pounds of Burley tobacco from the Burley Tobacco Growers’ Co operative Association. James C. Stone says the sale is among the largest to a single manufacturer and includes a large lot of 1922 Old Burley noted for exceptional quality and flavor. The leaf will be used in Velvet smoking tobacco and other brands.

Leslie Copeland of near Rainsboro presented his Highland county crop at Batavia where 1700 pounds sold for an average 86c per pound and top 67c. The land area was just under one acre and the Rainsboro region has gained a reputation for high quality tobacco.
