In Cambrai a father opposed his daughter's romance. The lovers met in a public garden and the father fired on the young man. The girl shielded him, dying from the shot. The lover leaped from the rampart to a dry ditch and died instantly. The father later went insane from grief.
Albert Hercules jailed for seduction of Miss Estella Blazer. He urged marriage to gain release and bonds for a child. She agreed to marry in May after the birth. In a cell dispute, Hercules smashed her with a heavy iron tap, causing skull fractures and severe injuries. Turnkey stopped the assault. doctors anticipate probable death.
A Bradford Bordell Kin zua railroad passenger train struck a stream of overflowing oil near the tracks on January 15. Oil coated the rails for about a hundred yards and the train bursts into flames turning the coach and baggage car into a furnace. Three women died and many passengers were seriously burned as they leaped from the windows to escape the blaze. The fire is believed to have started when oil met the engine firebox on a steep grade that prevented a full stop.
Mapes Mass January 15 Mrs Valeria Stone died this morning from injuries from a fall four weeks earlier. She donated over 1000000 to colleges and schools for girls including 100000 to Wellesley 150000 to Andover Theological Seminary 50000 to Drury College 50000 to Chicago Theological Seminary 30000 to Hamilton College and large gifts to Amherst and Oberlin as well as other New England colleges. Her gifts largely supported Congregational interests and the American Missionary Association for education of colored people in the South.
In Hovsrox Texas a party of young men and a woman from a variety theater frolicked. Drunkenly W C Lyons proposed to Lizzie Labayere and a Justice of the Peace joined them. Lyons’ wealthy Waco father offered 250 for a divorce which she refused. Lyons’ father denounces the marriage and will not acknowledge it.
Pursape Elrain reports William H. Atkins, jailed in Norristown for contempt of court over child support, is now suspected of complicity in the 1881 Clogston murder at Valley Forge in Montgomery County.
In New York on January 15 Mrs. McDonald of 19 Hamilton Avenue locked her two children in a room while she took a third to school. Returning home she found two children dead from suffocation after they had lit a fire on the floor.
Weatherford Texas January 15 a west bound Texas Pacific train derailed by a broken rail ten miles west of Weatherford at speed of twenty five mph. Two coaches toppled while sleepers remained on tracks injuring about thirty passengers with some serious cases including F C Wheeler Abilene and D E Bentley and Mrs McMahan Colorado Tex. Customs decisions shift to prompt public daily circulars in New York January 16 under Folger.
London dispatch notes a terrible mine accident in Wales with many workers trapped and at least one feared dead. Details are scarce as rescuers search the flooded shaft and secure the scene.
Philadelphia report chronicles Miss Clara V Venable whose husband Foster deceived her identity and vanished with her jewelry. Left penniless with an infant, she sought aid in New York and foster care for the child. Venable died in 1883 leaving $60,000 to the daughter. A search for the heiress is now underway.
January 16 report from Fatt River Massachusetts describes a fatal arson like fire at the Stickney residence. Charles P Stickney suffered severe burns while Mrs Stickney died from clothing within flames after naptha moth treatment ignited. A servant offered no details.
Amelia Olsen, seventeen, was found dead on a prairie near Cuyrenco after leaving a domestic job. Authorities believe she was outraged and strangled with her veil by unknown assailants in a crime of assault and homicide. No clues yet to identify the guilty party.
In New Haven on January 16 the will of Joseph Arnold late president of the Birmingham National Bank bequeaths thirty shares of bank stock to the town of Derby in recognition of local kindness. The stock and its accumulations are to be held until the principal and accumulations reach five million dollars in 2034, when the interest will be devoted to local secular schools and academies.
Mapazip January 16 At a free trade banquet four Ministers and the diplomatic corps attended the Minister for the Colonies defended the commercial treaty. The fall of the present Ministry is expected. If Senor Segasta enters power the American and English commercial treaties will be sanctioned by the Chamber unless Parliament is dissolved.
In Marietta Ohio at about four this morning the towboat Nail City burst a steam pipe while breaking ice on the Muskingum River. Second engineer Wesley Miner, aged forty five, was found dead in an open box at the rear of the boat. He resided in Harmer and is survived by his wife and four children.
Burglars entered Goldsmith & Co. at 49 Maiden Lane and opened two safes, taking diamonds and jewelry worth about 20,000 dollars. They also opened J Bulova’s safe on the floor above and stole 150 dollars in gold rings. The thieves fled, leaving tools and a partially opened safe behind.
A steamer named J. D. Johnson burned in the Monongahela River harbor at Wood's Run, Pitrssure. The blaze started from a stove and two men aboard escaped with nothing but their lives. The vessel owned by Richard Wellington was valued at $16,000.
A San Francisco man named Johnson used a clay brick gilded to pass as gold as security for a loan to Dr Thomas Kraze. He carried two bricks, a genuine 95 percent assay and a spurious gilded brick. Johnson was captured today and faces charges.

In Las Vegas New Mexico January 17 William Kelly known as a sporting man shot his mistress Rose Martin as she sat on a bed then killed himself. The coroner's jury ruled death by self inflicted gunshot. Kelly was from Covington Kentucky and about thirty years old.
In Ouray Colorado on January 17 authorities report the murder of foster child Mary Matthews by Mike Cuddike his wife and the wife’s brother John Carroll ten miles from town. The girl adopted from Denver Catholic Orphans Home died after severe abuse and freezing injuries. Coroner exhumed the body revealing skull fracture and multiple injuries. The trio was arrested while planning to flee and lynching talk spreads.
In Pittspere at 1 30 this morning the body of Professor Peter Voltz of Allegheny was found on the Tenth street Railroad Bridge with a bullet through his right temple. His coat and vest were open his pockets rifled and his watch gone. Nearby lay thirty cents and a tuning fork. No weapon or struggle is evident though homicide is suspected. Voltz leaves a wife and several grown children. The bridge is dark and a thieves’ haunt with no murderers found.
Lancaster, January 17. Hattie Scholl, daughter of a prominent citizen, died this morning from an operation allegedly performed by Dr. Bruce of Philadelphia. Joseph Stricker, her supposed betrayer, is under arrest. The dying statement alleges four other girls were treated at the Philadelphia house. Dr. Bruce was arrested tonight after a prior acquittal on a similar charge.
New York January 17 reports a church scandal at Ft. Greene Brooklyn where Mr Chamberlain a church pillar attempted to embrace the organist's wife and was slapped. The organist resigned and the church paid his term in full. Further church discipline developments are promised.
Water Valley Mississippi January 17 report of a deadly melee yesterday in William Harmon store at Dallas. Evans Harmon was killed, William Harmon and Lamar Harmon wounded, several others hurt. Bishop, the shooter and instigator, escaped harm and faces possible lynching if captured.
In Scranton Pennsylvania on January 17 a powder mill complex nine miles from the city exploded, destroying nine of ten mills. One man named L H Emery is confirmed killed and numerous others are believed dead. The Summers company was formed a year ago. The loss is serious.
In Salt Lake City on January 17 a solitary death occurred as Daniel Morris aged eighty four, a Mormon polygamist with three wives, hung himself in a shed beside his house after reading the Governor’s message.
Manager Cowles of the Concord Cattle Company reports Montana stock wintering well on the Upper Tongue River. He estimates next summer shipments at forty thousand head, up from thirty thousand this year.
Purtepe Louta January 17. John Suder Joseph Suder and Jeremiah T Wilson photographers pleaded guilty to manufacturing and selling obscene pictures and were sentenced to pay a $500 fine and to one year in prison each.
The Mayor of Birmingham Alabama reprimanded a police officer tried for assaulting a negro prisoner and said if an officer cannot endure abuse from prisoners he should resign at once.
Isaac Cornell of Elmira New York, aged 103, has learned he is the heir to a 3 million dollar English estate. The Buffalo Express notes the New Orleans Picayune’s new version of East Lynne calls it a dramatic aqueduct with slightly more tears than the old play.
Independence police chief John L. Swearinger died from a gunshot caused when his revolver slipped from his pocket during a prisoner search at the station house. The incident occurred Monday and was fatal this morning.
A New York Commerce and Advertiser line notes 1,500 murders occurred nationwide in the past year. The writer laments the era with a remark on sunsets appearing bloody red.

The engineer spotted a child on the track and stopped seconds before the boy was tied hand and foot to the rails. Railroad men freed him and transported him to Augusta amid strong suspicions of the would be killers.
London reports that Tewfik Bey and 10,000 women and children at Sinkat face a siege by about 27,000 rebel soldiers. Baker Pasha abandons hope of relief, with 400 defending and forces of 100,000 between Suakim and Berber, hindering aid. Tewfik Bey hopes to endure a little longer, but aid seems unlikely.
In Hunter's Point Queens on January 18 a boiler exploded in a kitchen killing five year old Charles M. Sherwood instantly. Kellogg Sherwood was fatally injured and his mother severely burned likely losing her eyesight. The room was completely wrecked.
Ecranton Pa January 18 L H Emery the only fatality from last night’s powder mill blast was struck by flying debris half a mile from the mill. The first explosion stemmed from an EUR and the others from sparks from the building fired. Loss placed at 35000 dollars uninsured. The company plans to rebuild.
January 18 report from Dusois Pa states Jim Gimbrandt, a saloon owner in the woods near town, was beaten unconscious and stabbed by neighbor Italians. He remains alive but is likely to die. Two Italians have been arrested.
Wheeling West Virginia January 18 reporter R B Woods of the daily Register was assaulted at daybreak and found unconscious. Officials fear fatal injuries as the Register offers a large reward for the offenders' capture.
An early morning blast in the mixing house of the Vulcan Dynamite Company in Allentown Pennsylvania instantly killed John W Buckenbone Isaac Kramer and Jacob Heffron. Three other men were slightly injured and three small buildings were destroyed.
Edward Tapven, arrested on suspicion in the Brookville murder of Mrs. Maybee and her daughter, has confessed at Hounter's Point. The crime is described as the most brutish atrocity and draws wide attention from investigators and locals.
