A vivid anecdote recalls Uncle John Robinson’s bold leap into a lion cage during a circus act. He faced a towering Douglas lion, the big-eyed beast advancing with restrained menace, and Robinson scrambled back into the cage with canvas helpers closing the door. The tale ends with Robinson’s vow to avoid Daniel the prophet’s role after that close encounter. Conkling resists, saying he cannot persuade any woman here, then withdraws into the Senate chamber as the crowd reacts with amusement.
