Siege of Saragossa described as a monument of heroic devotion
The 1808 siege saw Marshal Lannes command the French assault on Saragossa while Palafox led a stout Spanish defense. Despite13 weeks of bombardment, mine warfare, epidemics, and fierce house to house fighting, the city held until a capitulation allowed a dignified retreat. The record credits domestic pestilence and determined resistance over foreign arms as the decisive factors.
