The House narrowly passed an Evans amendment to strike the civil service commission's expenses from the appropriation bill, 67 to 61. Seth W. Brown defended voting against the system and pledged to cut off funding, amid reform opposition led by General Grosvenor.
Dr. Percy Ashburn of the U S A medical department receives orders to report for duty in Manila. He will travel with his wife and child. A fine piece of color work is Hood's Sarsaparilia Calendar for 1899 praised as artistic and up to date. The calendar, featuring an American Girl with a flag backdrop, costs 6 cents plus mailing to Hood & Co. Lowell MA.
Jacob Beidenbender a Cincinnati hatter suffered misfortune from burglary in October theft of about 2000 dollars worth of goods. A rain soaked night last Wednesday he was struck and bruised by a passing wagon as the fire department rushed to an alarm, suffering a scalp wound before being treated by a doctor.
In Highland county Judge Hughes offers licenses through January 4 to boost business under the new filing rule effective January 1. The first issued include Thomas P. Myrick and Lucinda Malick, with detailed personal data listed. Subsequent couples include George Oscar Ketchum with Bertha May Alexander and Martin M. Larkin with Catherine Ward.
The open-door group met last Monday with Allen B. Nichola chairing and Edwin K. Parrott delivering a thoughtful Imperialism paper. The lively discussion covered many political questions, with participants including Parrott Hullick Nichols Billman Belt Jamieson Walker Potts Lockwood Glancy and Branaugh. Col. Boone of the Black Diamond system threatens West Union residents with moving his proposed road five miles west unless $1,500 in subscriptions now due is paid. Citizens have already paid him $4,500, which would be lost if he shifts course.
The morning train from Cincinnati now leaves at 8 55 instead of 8 00 and reaches Georgetown at 12 20, with Columbia departure moved to 9 16. The revised times took effect last Sunday, replacing the previous timetable.
In the spring election three members of the school board will be elected. G. A. Frazier and J. L. Moore retire due to term expiration, and a new member will fill the unexpired term of Judge Parrott, who resigned. E. K. Parrott was appointed to fill the vacancy temporarily.
Two longtime Milford residents, Daniel Houck born 1807 in Poland Ohio and aged 92, and T A Evans born 1817 in Cincinnati, died recently at their Milford homes. Houck helped grow Milford since 1861 and leaves two daughters and a son. Evans, a renowned engraver formerly with Duhme Co, leaves a widow and three sons.

Aunt Betty Burrell longtime resident and freed slave turned community leader dies at home on Fourth and Spring streets between 7 and 8 pm. She leaves husband John Burrell and four of twelve children. Funeral set for Little Zion church tomorrow at 2 p.m. with family and neighbors mourning a life of faith and service.
Ripley Bee correspondent notes the rise of Calvin Brice from a 16 year old Oxford newcomer with little money to U S Senator from Ohio. Brice rode from Hamilton to save stage fare, later traveled in his private car and funded students, illustrating a remarkable ascent from modest origins to wealth and influence.
A quiet January 3 1899 wedding united Lilly Dale daughter of Mr and Mrs Warren Moorehead to Edward J Dunham a Fayetteville Brown County farmer. Rev Howard Billman officiated in the Monterey Batavia churches parlor ceremony followed by a wedding dinner then a short trip and new home near Fayetteville. The bride wore green valour trimmed with lace and pearls.

The second session of the Southern Clermont Farmers Institute will be held at Bethel on the 27th and 28th instants with an interesting programme. This year 250 institutes will be held in 88 counties, and two State speakers will be sent to each institute, paid by the State Board of Agriculture.
A recent congressional measure grants a two month furlough or two months pay for veterans who served abroad, and one month pay for those who did not, with full pay and benefits up to discharge. Discharges are issued one to two months in advance of release from service.
Lowell Roudebush of this county is praised as the most popular lecturer on the State Institute staff. He has been invited to speak this week, in a single evening session, on Alaska, with the audience guaranteed an original, plain, hard sense address.
Bethel youths enjoyed a cake walk led by M. J. Kain as master of ceremonies. Seven couples competed with William Conden and Clara Young and Isaiai Israel and Bertha Fitzpatrick noted as best dancers. Israel and Isaiai won the prize. William Dean and Chris Shriner judged. An elegant supper followed.
The will of Algernon Marden, who died on the Elias Duckwall farm last September, is admitted to probate. Estate valued at 200 000 dollars, minus one Tiinois farm left to widow. Daughter Clara M Weaver receives the Tiinois farm, husband is brother to William Weaver of Afton. Debtor leaves bank stock and 1 200 acres near Monmouth, Illinois, slated for high value. Three brothers in county listed. Also notes Shovan and Shough brothers returning to Clermont from Loeffler Missouri after their father Daniel Shough’s death in Goshen.
James Curry of Miami township drawn on the U S grand jury and Jesse Hunt of Wayne township on the petit jury for the February term. Civil actions include Blackerby vs Conley for money, Hulick vs Griffin and Hall to set aside deed, and Simmons vs Simmons a minor and others petition for partition.
At last week’s commissioners session Albert Griffith had an 80 day workhouse term and $50 fine remitted after serving confinement. Attorneys E Q Crane E C Ely and William Karns filed the remittance request.
An apron in Williams burg lodge F. A. M. archives transfers to Ora E. Everhart. It was worn by John Harvey Wright made Mason in 1850 and died in Libby Prison in 1864. It then passed to Robert Simpson McNutt made Mason in 1857 who died in Isv7. Now it goes to Wright’s eldest daughter's husband.
Loveland Register reports 100 sheep killed at night in a Warren and Clermont county pasture with tracks of sharp toed shoes and carcasses mutilated as if by Jose. The case may raise which county pays damages while Western Star mocks local prudery about soldiers and girls and their “arms” in wartime reminiscence.
Among those who received life high school certificates last week were J. W. Smith of Higginsport C A Wilson Brown County examiner and Williamsburg superintendent Frank E Reynolds Manchester schools and Charles F Hansenman Aberdeen schools. The next examination will be held at Columbus June 20 21 22 and December 26 27 28.

The King’s Mills works in Warren County near Loveland covers two miles and produced last year 200000 kegs blasting powder 2000 kegs sporting powder 500 kegs smokeless 60000000 black powder shells and 1icui u0 smokeless. The three great powder plants are at New Haven Bridgeport and King’s Mills with the latter by far the largest. Many Clermont County residents are employed by the company.
Mrs Lizzie Finch wife of J M Finch a noted temperance lecturer from Galesburg Illinois is visiting Clermont with friends for a brief stay to attend the burial of her father Daniel Shough Goshen township. She plans to visit her brothers in law John and George Smayser and her brother Webb Shough before returning West. Friends here regret the sad reason for her visit yet are glad to have her in Clermont and note her good health and cheerful demeanor despite the bereavement.
The Ametta board of education presents the Kentucky Colonels Male Quartet on Saturday evening January 21 at the hall. The group from Kentucky features native Kentuckians with two members who are nationally known composers and a refined balance of voices. Reserved seats cost 25 cents, tickets available at Amelia post office ConongeL W J DRYAN visited Cincinnati last week for Chamber of Commerce and Duckworth club events and spoke before both bodies.
